Organization: Otolaryngology / Head and Neck Surgery

Title: Postdoctoral Scholar – Auditory brain and behavioral predictors of late language emergence

Position Details

Position Description

The University of Washington’s Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery and the Virginia Merrill Bloedel Hearing Research Center has an opening for a motivated postdoctoral researcher to join an NIH-funded project investigating brain and behavioral development in early childhood. This longitudinal study focuses on auditory processing and aims to identify neural and behavioral predictors of late language emergence in both typically developing infants and those at risk for language delays. Leveraging longitudinal EEG and behavioral assessments, the research seeks to discover early markers that can facilitate timely diagnosis and inform targeted interventions for infants vulnerable to delayed language development.

The successful candidate will join a collaborative, multidisciplinary team dedicated to advancing our understanding of early auditory and language development and informing clinical assessments and interventions that support infant development.

We seek a motivated researcher with expertise in EEG data acquisition and analysis, strong programming skills, and a passion for developmental neuroscience. Experience working with infants or young children is highly desirable.

This will be a full-time position on an annual service period of 12 months (July 1–June 30). The anticipated start date is October 1, 2025 or later.

The base salary for this position will be $5,705 per month ($68,460 per year), or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

Postdoctoral scholars at the University of Washington are represented by UAW 4121 and subject to the collective bargaining agreement, except where exclusions apply. For details, please visit the University of Washington Labor Relations website.

Qualifications

We are looking for candidates who bring:

Expertise in EEG acquisition, signal processing, and data analysis

Proficiency in programming

Experience in child development research, especially related to auditory processing, language acquisition, or related domains

Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team

Enthusiasm for longitudinal research and working with infant or early childhood populations

Applicants should hold a PhD or foreign equivalent in developmental psychology, neuroscience, speech and hearing sciences, engineering, or a related field.

Instructions

Applicants should submit via Interfolio:

A cover letter describing your interest and relevant experience

Curriculum vitae

Two representative publications

Contact information for three references

For project-related questions, please contact Dr. Bonnie Lau at blau@uw.edu.

Project description

The postdoctoral fellow will explore synaptic processes and white matter pathways between remote brain areas in vivo in animal models that underlie plasticity in the prefrontal cortex of mice. We will focus on neuronal micro- and macro-circuits that influence our feeding behavior, which includes the prefrontal cortex with a focus on selection between stimuli of different value and its plasticity. The project will be carried out by applying “all optical physiology” methods, i.e. a combination of calcium imaging with optogenetics, in freely behaving animals in Paolo Medini’s lab, in collaboration with Olof Lagerlöf and UmU’s new visiting professor Valentina Emiliani.

Tasks

The postdoctoral fellow will work with animal models (mouse) with a combination of techniques to measure and influence micro- and macro-circuits in vivo. Techniques include one/two-photon microscopy, electrophysiology, chemo-optogenetics. Behavioral measurements will be performed in collaboration with Olof Lagerlöf’s group. The postdoc will image (and influence with opto-chemogenetics) the network representation of stimuli of different economic/hedonic value and its plasticity with two-photon microscopy. Other methods such as functional MRI and PET can potentially be included to study plasticity in macrocircuits.

Eligibility

Eligible to be employed as a postdoc is someone who has completed a doctoral degree, or a foreign degree that is considered equivalent to a doctoral degree, in biomedical or physical subjects relevant to the execution of the project. This eligibility requirement must be met at the latest at the time the employment decision is made.

Requirements for employment: documented experience with neurophysiological methods, in particular imaging of brain networks, chemo-optogenetics in behaving animals.

Since the position as a postdoc is a merit position for junior researchers, we primarily target those who have a doctoral degree that is not older than three years from the application deadline. If there are special reasons, a person who has completed a doctoral degree earlier may be considered. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, clinical service, positions of trust within trade unions or other similar circumstances, as well as service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

Meritorious knowledge and experience:

Documented experience of behavioral measurements in animals and programming with Phyton/Matlab is a meritorious achievement. Documented experience with calcium imaging and/or optogenetics, as well as behavioral measurements is particularly meritorious.

More about the position

The position is a full-time fixed-term employment for three years according to the terms of the agreement on fixed-term employment as a postdoctoral fellow.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The project investigates how evolutionary divergence between two closely related hare species (Lepus timidus and Lepus europaeus) leads to differences in cell cycle dynamics and regulation at both physiological and molecular levels. The work integrates core molecular and cell biology methods with advanced live-cell confocal imaging, single-cell ATAC-seq, and nascent RNA transcriptomics. You will lead this development with the support of the team and co-inventor Mikael Marttinen. A doctoral researcher will assist you experimentally, and additional support for both data analysis and wet-lab validation will be provided by our Joensuu collaborators.

The project seeks to uncover mechanisms linking life history strategies and cell cycle regulation. While relevant to species conservation, the findings are also expected to contribute to cancer biology and the understanding of cellular senescence.

Candidates with proven ability to supervise M.Sc. and Ph.D. students will be considered an advantage. The position may also involve a small amount of teaching duties in the future. The position also requires that the candidate can meet the responsibilities identified in laboratory and ethical guidelines. Finally, good communication skills and fluency in English (both written and oral) will be considered important for the position. Please describe your relevant experience and skills in detail in the cover letter, and please be prepared to provide proof of your merits when requested.

Tampere University is a unique, multidisciplinary, and boldly forward-looking community. Our values are openness, diversity, responsibility, courage, critical thinking, and learner-centeredness. We hope that you can embrace these values and promote them in your work.

We offer

The two positions are filled for a fixed-term period of three years. We hope that you can start in the position on January 1st, 2026. A six-month trial period applies to all new employees.

Salaries are based on job demands and employees’ personal performance in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. The position of a Postdoctoral Researcher is placed on the job demands levels 5-6 (teaching and research staff).

Job description

The group recently obtained proof-of-concept funding for the optimization of protein-based liquid foams using a combination of computational and experimental approaches. The multidisciplinary framework with national and international collaborators is used to build a molecular model for the organization of proteins at the air–liquid interface in the foam. Next, this knowledge is used to design point mutations which would alter the properties of the foam. These designed protein variants are then produced by the collaborating team at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, followed by experimental validation of their performance.

Your tasks will involve coordinating the daily work on the project; designing, performing and analyzing simulations; communicating with the collaborators; supervising the doctoral researcher working on the project; preparing manuscripts for publication; and disseminating the findings at meetings and conferences. A doctoral researcher (PhD student) will also be hired to work exclusively on the project.

Requirements

You should have a PhD degree in physics, chemistry, biosciences, or a related subject area, preferably with a solid background in molecular dynamics simulations (e.g., GROMACS) and at least basic knowledge of programming (e.g., Python). The demonstrated ability to develop simulation or analysis tools, to use AI tools to predict the conformational ensembles of proteins, or to apply machine learning methods to simulation data are considered major advantages.

You are expected to be able to work independently, supervise the work of students, and potentially contribute to the teaching activities of the unit. You should be fluent in spoken and written English. International experience and networks are also appreciated.

Tampere University is a unique, multidisciplinary and boldly forward-looking, evolving community. Our values are openness, diversity, responsibility, courage, critical thinking, erudition/ Bildung, and learner-centredness. We hope that you can embrace these values and promote them in your work.

We offer

The position offers a unique opportunity to develop a research idea towards applications and establish a new line of multidisciplinary research. The project is supported by a network of experimental collaborators as well as the protein services team at VTT.

The position will be filled for a fixed-term period of 2 years, starting in the spring of 2026. The start date is flexible and negotiable. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees. In case the proof-of-concept phase of the project is successful, extensions to the project are possible either within academia or through commercialization efforts (such as research to business funding).

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. The position of a Postdoctoral Researcher is placed on the job demands levels 5–6 (teaching and research staff). A typical starting salary of Postdoctoral Researcher is around 3800–4000 EUR/month.

The BioInterfaces group is part of the Computational physics laboratory, which hosts 8 active research groups covering topics in biophysics, quantum matter, complex systems, novel materials, nanostructures, electronic structure and interdisciplinary challenges in medical technologies and physiology. The BioInterfaces group collaborates with numerous computational and experimental groups nationally and internationally. The group has access to the exceptional computational resources hosted by CSC–IT Center of Science in Finland.

We offer you the opportunity to join our dynamic and innovative international community. As a member of staff at Tampere University, you will enjoy a range of competitive benefits, such as occupational health care services, flexible work schedule, versatile research infrastructure, modern teaching facilities and a safe and inviting campus area as well as a personal fund to spend on sports and cultural activities in your free time.
