Organization: Otolaryngology / Head and Neck Surgery

Title: Postdoctoral Scholar – Auditory brain and behavioral predictors of late language emergence

Position Details

Position Description

The University of Washington’s Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery and the Virginia Merrill Bloedel Hearing Research Center has an opening for a motivated postdoctoral researcher to join an NIH-funded project investigating brain and behavioral development in early childhood. This longitudinal study focuses on auditory processing and aims to identify neural and behavioral predictors of late language emergence in both typically developing infants and those at risk for language delays. Leveraging longitudinal EEG and behavioral assessments, the research seeks to discover early markers that can facilitate timely diagnosis and inform targeted interventions for infants vulnerable to delayed language development.

The successful candidate will join a collaborative, multidisciplinary team dedicated to advancing our understanding of early auditory and language development and informing clinical assessments and interventions that support infant development.

We seek a motivated researcher with expertise in EEG data acquisition and analysis, strong programming skills, and a passion for developmental neuroscience. Experience working with infants or young children is highly desirable.

This will be a full-time position on an annual service period of 12 months (July 1–June 30). The anticipated start date is October 1, 2025 or later.

The base salary for this position will be $5,705 per month ($68,460 per year), or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

Postdoctoral scholars at the University of Washington are represented by UAW 4121 and subject to the collective bargaining agreement, except where exclusions apply. For details, please visit the University of Washington Labor Relations website.

Qualifications

We are looking for candidates who bring:

Expertise in EEG acquisition, signal processing, and data analysis

Proficiency in programming

Experience in child development research, especially related to auditory processing, language acquisition, or related domains

Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team

Enthusiasm for longitudinal research and working with infant or early childhood populations

Applicants should hold a PhD or foreign equivalent in developmental psychology, neuroscience, speech and hearing sciences, engineering, or a related field.

Instructions

Applicants should submit via Interfolio:

A cover letter describing your interest and relevant experience

Curriculum vitae

Two representative publications

Contact information for three references

For project-related questions, please contact Dr. Bonnie Lau at blau@uw.edu.

Project description

The postdoctoral fellow will explore synaptic processes and white matter pathways between remote brain areas in vivo in animal models that underlie plasticity in the prefrontal cortex of mice. We will focus on neuronal micro- and macro-circuits that influence our feeding behavior, which includes the prefrontal cortex with a focus on selection between stimuli of different value and its plasticity. The project will be carried out by applying “all optical physiology” methods, i.e. a combination of calcium imaging with optogenetics, in freely behaving animals in Paolo Medini’s lab, in collaboration with Olof Lagerlöf and UmU’s new visiting professor Valentina Emiliani.

Tasks

The postdoctoral fellow will work with animal models (mouse) with a combination of techniques to measure and influence micro- and macro-circuits in vivo. Techniques include one/two-photon microscopy, electrophysiology, chemo-optogenetics. Behavioral measurements will be performed in collaboration with Olof Lagerlöf’s group. The postdoc will image (and influence with opto-chemogenetics) the network representation of stimuli of different economic/hedonic value and its plasticity with two-photon microscopy. Other methods such as functional MRI and PET can potentially be included to study plasticity in macrocircuits.

Eligibility

Eligible to be employed as a postdoc is someone who has completed a doctoral degree, or a foreign degree that is considered equivalent to a doctoral degree, in biomedical or physical subjects relevant to the execution of the project. This eligibility requirement must be met at the latest at the time the employment decision is made.

Requirements for employment: documented experience with neurophysiological methods, in particular imaging of brain networks, chemo-optogenetics in behaving animals.

Since the position as a postdoc is a merit position for junior researchers, we primarily target those who have a doctoral degree that is not older than three years from the application deadline. If there are special reasons, a person who has completed a doctoral degree earlier may be considered. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, clinical service, positions of trust within trade unions or other similar circumstances, as well as service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

Meritorious knowledge and experience:

Documented experience of behavioral measurements in animals and programming with Phyton/Matlab is a meritorious achievement. Documented experience with calcium imaging and/or optogenetics, as well as behavioral measurements is particularly meritorious.

More about the position

The position is a full-time fixed-term employment for three years according to the terms of the agreement on fixed-term employment as a postdoctoral fellow.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The project investigates how evolutionary divergence between two closely related hare species (Lepus timidus and Lepus europaeus) leads to differences in cell cycle dynamics and regulation at both physiological and molecular levels. The work integrates core molecular and cell biology methods with advanced live-cell confocal imaging, single-cell ATAC-seq, and nascent RNA transcriptomics. You will lead this development with the support of the team and co-inventor Mikael Marttinen. A doctoral researcher will assist you experimentally, and additional support for both data analysis and wet-lab validation will be provided by our Joensuu collaborators.

The project seeks to uncover mechanisms linking life history strategies and cell cycle regulation. While relevant to species conservation, the findings are also expected to contribute to cancer biology and the understanding of cellular senescence.

Candidates with proven ability to supervise M.Sc. and Ph.D. students will be considered an advantage. The position may also involve a small amount of teaching duties in the future. The position also requires that the candidate can meet the responsibilities identified in laboratory and ethical guidelines. Finally, good communication skills and fluency in English (both written and oral) will be considered important for the position. Please describe your relevant experience and skills in detail in the cover letter, and please be prepared to provide proof of your merits when requested.

Tampere University is a unique, multidisciplinary, and boldly forward-looking community. Our values are openness, diversity, responsibility, courage, critical thinking, and learner-centeredness. We hope that you can embrace these values and promote them in your work.

We offer

The two positions are filled for a fixed-term period of three years. We hope that you can start in the position on January 1st, 2026. A six-month trial period applies to all new employees.

Salaries are based on job demands and employees’ personal performance in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. The position of a Postdoctoral Researcher is placed on the job demands levels 5-6 (teaching and research staff).

Job description

The group recently obtained proof-of-concept funding for the optimization of protein-based liquid foams using a combination of computational and experimental approaches. The multidisciplinary framework with national and international collaborators is used to build a molecular model for the organization of proteins at the air–liquid interface in the foam. Next, this knowledge is used to design point mutations which would alter the properties of the foam. These designed protein variants are then produced by the collaborating team at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, followed by experimental validation of their performance.

Your tasks will involve coordinating the daily work on the project; designing, performing and analyzing simulations; communicating with the collaborators; supervising the doctoral researcher working on the project; preparing manuscripts for publication; and disseminating the findings at meetings and conferences. A doctoral researcher (PhD student) will also be hired to work exclusively on the project.

Requirements

You should have a PhD degree in physics, chemistry, biosciences, or a related subject area, preferably with a solid background in molecular dynamics simulations (e.g., GROMACS) and at least basic knowledge of programming (e.g., Python). The demonstrated ability to develop simulation or analysis tools, to use AI tools to predict the conformational ensembles of proteins, or to apply machine learning methods to simulation data are considered major advantages.

You are expected to be able to work independently, supervise the work of students, and potentially contribute to the teaching activities of the unit. You should be fluent in spoken and written English. International experience and networks are also appreciated.

Tampere University is a unique, multidisciplinary and boldly forward-looking, evolving community. Our values are openness, diversity, responsibility, courage, critical thinking, erudition/ Bildung, and learner-centredness. We hope that you can embrace these values and promote them in your work.

We offer

The position offers a unique opportunity to develop a research idea towards applications and establish a new line of multidisciplinary research. The project is supported by a network of experimental collaborators as well as the protein services team at VTT.

The position will be filled for a fixed-term period of 2 years, starting in the spring of 2026. The start date is flexible and negotiable. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees. In case the proof-of-concept phase of the project is successful, extensions to the project are possible either within academia or through commercialization efforts (such as research to business funding).

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. The position of a Postdoctoral Researcher is placed on the job demands levels 5–6 (teaching and research staff). A typical starting salary of Postdoctoral Researcher is around 3800–4000 EUR/month.

The BioInterfaces group is part of the Computational physics laboratory, which hosts 8 active research groups covering topics in biophysics, quantum matter, complex systems, novel materials, nanostructures, electronic structure and interdisciplinary challenges in medical technologies and physiology. The BioInterfaces group collaborates with numerous computational and experimental groups nationally and internationally. The group has access to the exceptional computational resources hosted by CSC–IT Center of Science in Finland.

We offer you the opportunity to join our dynamic and innovative international community. As a member of staff at Tampere University, you will enjoy a range of competitive benefits, such as occupational health care services, flexible work schedule, versatile research infrastructure, modern teaching facilities and a safe and inviting campus area as well as a personal fund to spend on sports and cultural activities in your free time. This is why we warmly encourage qualified candidates from all backgrounds to join our community.

We are recruiting one Postdoctoral Researcher (2y) to join our team.

What you will be working on:

The project
The rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) has led to increased energy consumption in data centers, raising concerns about carbon emissions. To address these challenges and support sustainability goals, the project DecAI aims to decarbonize AI through long-term impact assessment and optimization. The goal is to develop a framework to estimate carbon emissions across AI’s development, operation, and use. This framework enables stakeholders, such as AI providers and data center operators, to evaluate and compare scenarios to reduce emissions. The framework will be released as a software tool to guide emissions reduction strategies. The project aims to optimize the operations (serving) of AI by developing algorithms that manage compute, network, and storage resources in a carbon-efficient way while supporting long-term benefits for the electricity grid. By addressing AI’s entire lifecycle, DecAI offers a holistic approach to reducing carbon emissions.

Your role
You will work closely with our team on tasks to:

Identify and evaluate carbon metrics for reducing the environmental impact of AI and cloud computing

Empirically evaluate different parts of the AI lifecycle, including development (training), operation (inference) and use

Develop methodologies to estimate the long-term impact of AI on carbon emissions and other environmental indicators

The Autotelic Interaction Research (AIR) group at the Dept. of Computer Science, Aalto University, Finland is looking for 1 Doctoral Researcher (2+2 years) and 1 Postdoc (2 years) to work on Computational Social Intrinsic Motivation (SIM)

The project

Our goal is to advance social AI, i.e. artificial agents capable of supporting us proactively or reactively in a range of virtual or embodied tasks. However, existing social AI and artificial agents more generally still struggle in delivering reliable support in situations that were not anticipated at design-time, and their decision-making processes may be hard to understand by interaction partners or operators. This project tackles these challenges by advancing Social Intrinsic Motivation (SIM), i.e. computational models of intrinsic motivation applied to the interaction of multiple agents.

Intrinsic motivation (IM), with curiosity being a well-known example, is crucial to human development, allowing us to acquire new knowledge and skills in the absence of specific tasks, and to adapt to new situations. Computational models of IM [*] inherit these properties, making artificial agents more independent of external instruction and allowing them to perform better in previously unknown tasks. Typically formalised in the framework of reinforcement learning, computational models of IM are not black boxes, which enables explanation of the emerging behaviour and supports trust by the AI’s designers and interaction partners.

SIM seeks to leverage the power of IM in the interaction of multiple agents. One example could be motivating an AI to optimise their partner’s intrinsic motivation, thus empowering them through its own behaviour. Pioneering work led to exciting findings such as emergent support of human interaction partners across tasks and without external instruction [1-4] or considerably improved cooperation within societies of artificial agents [5,6]. These are only few examples and what defines SIM is an open question – to be addressed in this project.

This project sets out to develop a better understanding of the space of possible SIM, to systematically develop new models informed by psychology, and to evaluate them through large-scale simulation and user studies. These models will then be applied in next-generation videogame AI [e.g. 1,2] as a stepping stone to other high-impact applications, and as a means to study the human mind. The project not only seeks to advance AI through a human-centric lens, but also to produce insights into how motivation guides social interaction, advancing research beyond computer science. The AIR group supports this through a track record of research on single-agent computational IM [e.g. 7], SIM [e.g. 3], and translational research with psychology [e.g. 8].

Aalto University is looking for an

Postdoctoral Researcher in Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning Engineering [Academic Research Software Engineer]

to a postdoctoral-level position. The desired start dates would be as soon as possible in 2025.

Are you more of a programmer than your researcher colleagues? Are you more of a researcher than commercial developers? Do you want a career that involves research and science but isn’t the academic tenure track? The Academic Research Software Engineer position is your next step on that path.

This position will be similar to a postdoc, but with an emphasis on research infrastructure and technology rather than preparation for an academic career path. You will be involved in research, but more focused on learning and improving how computing, workflows, and data are used in research than finding your own novel research results and publishing them.

You will work in a research group and be affiliated with Aalto Scientific Computing (ASC). You’ll serve as an intermediary between the two. Compared to the staff of ASC, you will be directly based in a research group, much more involved in day-to-day research, follow projects for a much longer period, and more involved in publications. Compared to a typical academic position, you will have a joint affiliation with ASC and get extra training in research engineering. There will be less emphasis on novel results for the sake of novelty, and more on applying and developing best practices in the way the research is done.

In this position, you will:

Serve as the local research software engineer for your research group(s) and improve the use of computing among all group members.

Stay up to date with the latest HPC, AI, and general computing/data management practices, evaluate latest developments, and implement whatever is most suitable.

Possibility to take part in publications as a research engineer.

Provide one-on-one and group research support from a software, programming, Linux, data, and infrastructure perspective: short-term projects helping researchers with specific tasks, so that the researchers gain competence to work independently.

Provide good role models of best open science practices.

As needed and depending on interest, teaching and other research infrastructure support.

General qualifications: As expected for a computational-science postdoc or doctoral student position in your field, with a special focus on high-quality computation and data management

This particular call emphasizes general AI skills and interest to take part in MLOps, including (but not limited to) performance tracing for improved scalability, energy efficiency and fault tolerance in ML training / inference. We seek to improve our AI and machine learning work by bringing in tools to assist in training and inference, integrated with our cluster. You don’t need special knowledge already when applying – general knowledge of machine learning practices is enough, and you’ll learn more later.

Important skills:

Desire to mentor and work with other researchers with understanding and compassion.

Ability to tackle any problem with a researcher’s mindset and a developer’s passion for technology.

Good communication and organizational skills, independent working style as well as flexibility in changing situations.

Experience or knowledge of the principles of open source software, open science, and software development tools such as version control.

Please see https://scicomp.aalto.fi/rse/become-a-rse/ for more information on what kind of skills we value – or more precisely what you are likely to learn.

Good skills and experience in written, spoken, and collaborative work in English.

What we offer:

A career path optimized for transition to industry.

You will be affiliated with the dynamic Aalto Scientific Computing team, where you will learn from some of the best research IT specialists in Finland.

Co-working within top-quality research groups, getting experience in a wide variety of fields and developing an extensive network of scientific contacts. This includes contacts to the Aalto startup scene and community.

A way to be close to the research process while focusing on interesting computational problems and not the publication process.

Mentorship to improve your software, data, and computing skills – you are expected to engage in plenty of professional development.

Open Source is our expectation. All (or most) of your code may be open source and may be added to your public CV, depending on the needs of researchers.

Fixed-term contract until 29.2.2028.

All other standard benefits of Aalto as an employer: pleasant campus, occupational healthcare, a sustainable workplace, support and coaching, and robust opportunities for professional development. Read more.

Salary will be according to the Aalto University pay scales for postdoctoral researchers. The primary workplace is Otaniemi, Espoo (Helsinki region), Finland.

We are looking to make several hires on two new projects related to the interaction of mental health and polarization. We welcome applications at both postdoc and doctoral levels. The projects run for 4 years, and the starting date for the positions is flexible. The duration of the doctoral positions is 4 years, but the length of the postdoc position is negotiable.

The positions are in the Department of Computer Science at Aalto University in Finland. You will be joining a larger group of researchers working on similar topics. The department has a strong community on related topics: research groups working on digital health and wellbeing, network science, computational social science, and various topics in machine learning.

You will be working in the research group of one of the PIs of the projects, but in collaboration with the others. The PIs are Talayeh Aledavood, Juhi Kulshrestha, and Mikko Kivelä.

About the projects

Political polarization and mental health are deeply intertwined challenges of our time, with rising ideological divides and fragmented information ecosystems coinciding with increasing stress, anxiety, and declining well-being. Polarizing online content not only fuels division and erodes trust but also provokes emotional strain, amplifies loneliness, and threatens resilience. At the same time, mental health vulnerabilities can heighten individuals’ susceptibility to divisive narratives, creating a reinforcing feedback loop between societal fragmentation and personal well-being. Addressing this dual crisis requires a holistic, interdisciplinary approach that bridges computational social science and computational mental health to capture fine-grained behavioral data, uncover underlying mechanisms, and design interventions that reduce harm, promote healthier information consumption, and strengthen both individual and collective resilience.

1. POLEMIC: POLarization Entangled with Mental well-being: Integrated and Computational approach to quantifying the underlying feedback loop

The POLEMIC project investigates the dynamic entanglement of political polarization and declining mental well-being by integrating computational mental health and computational social science, using large-scale social media analysis, smartphone-based sensing, and agent-based modeling. Combining macro-level patterns with micro-level behavioral data, it will examine how polarized content influences stress, anxiety, depression, and loneliness, and how mental health vulnerabilities increase susceptibility to polarization. Leveraging network science, NLP, behavioral sensing, and causal inference, the project pioneers new methods for detecting and mitigating online harms. Its results aim to inform public health, policy, and technology design, promoting resilience and empowering individuals to understand and counteract their exposure to polarizing content.

2. PolWell: Mental Health & Wellbeing in the Age of Polarizing Web Content

The PolWell project investigates the fragmented information ecosystems and polarizing online content that deepens divides, provokes strong emotions, and reinforces biases by going beyond the previous research, which has been limited to relying on biased self-reports and cross-sectional data. This project takes a novel, interdisciplinary approach, combining fine-grained web-browsing data, validated psychological scales, online experiments, and qualitative interviews to uncover both correlational and causal links between online polarization and a multidimensional perspective on mental health and wellbeing. Using advanced methods in statistical modeling, NLP, HCI, and experimental design, it will also test interventions, such as visual cues, to reduce harm and foster healthier browsing, delivering actionable insights for policymakers, mental health professionals, and platform designers.
