Your team
The Balder beamline is dedicated to X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) experiments in the medium and hard X-ray energy range, 2.4 – 40 keV. The beamline is in user operation since 2019 and serves users from a magnitude of fields within material science, catalysis, chemistry, physics, biology, geology and environmental science. The beamline is specialized towards work with in-situ/operando X-ray spectroscopy and to handle dilute and sensitive samples, often in a multimodal fashion combined with XRD or XRF. The high brilliance from the 3 GeV storage ring in combination with the beamline design allows us to perform time-resolved measurements down to sub-second time resolution. To achieve this, Balder uses bespoke X-ray optics and complex scientific hardware, X-ray detectors and sample environments. The nature of the samples is also highly varied from gases to solid samples, and may require use of tailored reactor cells or cryogenic temperatures, for example. An advanced gas mixing system is presently installed to serve user experiments. All of this require Balder to achieve high levels of reliability to enable users to carry out experiments 24/7.

Would you like to work at one of the brightest lightsources in the world?

MAX IV is looking for an instrument scientist (research engineer) who will have the overarching view of the beamline instruments as well as coordinate and execute beamline operation, commissioning, maintenance and further development of Balder beamline together with the Balder team.

To actively participate in development of beamline software

To work actively with user support as local contact, from pre-planning to execute beamtime experiments and data analysis support for Balder techniques, mainly X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (including EXAFS). On call duties will apply

Together with the beamline team deliver first class user science

To be successful in this role you need to have the following qualifications

PhD in physics, chemistry, engineering or closely related discipline

Extensive experience of work at or use of hard X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy beamline

Expertise in XAS analysis (XANES and EXAFS)

Below are seen as merits

Experience with user support and instrumentation at hard X-ray spectroscopy beamline

Leading instrument development projects

Combined XAS and X-ray diffraction, including XRD analysis

Python programming for data reduction, gui and analysis pipelines

Basic knowledge of Tango based control systems

Practical experience of XES data collection and analysis

As a person you are a proactive team player with excellent problem solving and communication skills, fluency in English, and have the ability to effectively manage your time and priorities in an international environment.
