The The Division of Surgical Science of Surgery at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist. Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, the individual will train in developing and participating in a research project that focuses on cellular and molecular mechanism underlying neuronal degeneration relevant to basic and translational study in novel transgenic mouse model of aging and Alzheimer’s disease. This Postdoctoral position will focus on the study of cellular and neuronal function and neurodegeneration in primary neurons and in brain of in vivo animals. Responsibilities include:

·      Laboratory research in the area of neurodegeneration and mitochondrial function.

·      Perform cell and neuronal culture, transfection of gene expression in primary and continuous cell lines, viral transfections in vitro and in vivo and mouse brain injection.

·      Immunostaining/fluorescence and confocal microscopy images and neuropathology in vitro cultured neurons and in vivo brain section.

·      Immunoblotting, ELISA, and RNA analysis for protein expression and pattern and gene changes, and mouse behavior.

·      Conduct literature searches, manage data, analyze experimental results and published data. Participate in the development of an extramurally funded research program by assisting PIs with NIH grants.

·      Mice handling

Additional responsibilities include participation in the academic and research missions of the University, the Department of Surgery

Qualifications

  •  PhD, MD or MD/PhD
  • Experience in biochemistry and molecular biology
  • Participation in research projects related to mitochondrial function and structure changes
  • Previous experience with immunostaining, neuronal culture, confocal microscopy,
  •  The ability to assist with writing scientific papers and grant applications
