Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

Humlab’s mission is to initiate, inspire and develop the intersection between the humanities, culture and information technology. Humlab’s premises are located in two buildings on campus, i.e. the Humanities Building and the Social Sciences Building, situated beneath the University Library, where Humlab’s lab environment is located. In this environment, lectures, workshops and other events are offered for researchers, students and the public.

Duties and responsibilities
The main tasks involve working on the visualization infrastructure InfraVis, on other infrastructures at Humlab, as well as on other activities within Humlab.

  • Working with Humlab’s regular program activities, which may include, for example, developing and giving short courses, participating in various types of events and arrangements, and providing support to the Faculty of Arts and Humanities staff (teachers and researchers) in inquiries related to GIS and/or network analysis.
  • Working within Humlab’s other infrastructures (e.g. Huminfra).
  • The role may also include, to a lesser extent, teaching, planning and developing teaching assignments, as well as supervising students, and supporting project applications.

Tasks may change over time.

  • Theoretical and practical competence in GIS.
  • Competence in network analysis and network analysis tools.
  • Good teamwork and initiative skills.

  • Experience of coordinating work in a team is considered an advantage. This experience is relevant to the role as node coordinator within the InfraVis infrastructure.
  • Experience of working in the digital humanities.
  • Proficiency in specific GIS tools such as ArchGIS or QGIS.
  • Experience of working with GIS-related research data, including data collection and processing.
  • Skills and experience in developing “off-the-shelf” solutions in GIS (e.g. with ArchGIS online) to visualize research data.

Application
The application shall include:

(1) A letter of motivation explaining your interest in the position, outlining your qualifications, and explaining how these are relevant to the tasks (1-2 pages)
