This Staff Scientist position will be based at Umeå Marine Sciences Centre (UMF) which is a unit within Umeå University and is located in Norrbyn just 40 km south of Umeå. UMF’s strategic remit focuses on research, environmental monitoring and public engagement. Particularly relevant to this position, UMF’s area of remit includes the Arctic, sub-Arctic and extreme environments with the former warming at four times the global average. Job description and working tasks
We are seeking an outstanding candidate who will have a primary role of answering research questions related to environmental-driven change in marine ecosystems and/or systems using genomic, biogeochemical and/or ecological approaches which complement the current areas of staff expertise at UMF. Further, a key role of this position will be dissemination of research via scientific peer-reviewed literature.

UMF is a research nexus attracting international researchers, thus the successful candidate will perform a key function in dialogues with visiting groups and UMF colleagues promoting collaboration in the context of environmental grand challenges. The successful candidate will also be a member of the UMF Research grouping which develops research strategy relevant to our organisation.

Qualifications

Essential criteria:

  • PhD in biology, chemistry or equivalent
  • Experience answering scientific questions using molecular, biogeochemical, and/or ecological approaches
  • Experience conducting research in marine and/or aquatic systems
  • Track record of peer-reviewed publications as lead / senior author
  • Proven ability to work and plan independently
  • Fluent in English (spoken and written) with the ability to communicate using scientific and technical terminology
  • Collaborative approach to research and publication

Meriting Criteria:

  • Experience analysing ecosystem and/or system change in context of environmental influences in marine/aquatic systems
  • Track record of research grant or industrial income (e.g. individual fellowship)
  • Evidence of research in the Arctic, sub-Arctic and/or extreme environments
  • Use of industry standard analysis platforms/languages (e.g. MATLAB, R, Python, QGIS, omics packages)
  • Post-doctoral experience
  • Driving licence for car

This is a full-time position and a probationary period may apply. Expected start date for position will be Autumn 2025.
