Missions
• Conduct research in the history of knowledge and anthropology in colonial and post-colonial situations on the constitution and circulation of archives and documentary resources within the framework of the ANR ArchIFAN project “Revisiting the history of science in a colonial situation. Actors, actresses and archives of the French Institute of Black Africa (IFAN)”.
• Contribute to the actions of promoting the ArchIFAN project.
Activities
• Conduct anthropological and historical research to identify and locate scattered corpora of archives and documentary resources in France and West Africa, study their production and circulation, and examine their current legacies.
• Prepare and submit at least two research articles to peer-reviewed journals.
• Present work in at least three scientific events.
• Coordinate the updating of a database.
• Participate in the promotion of the ArchIFAN project.
• Participate in the organization of an international conference.
SKILLS
The candidate must have completed a doctoral thesis in the humanities and social sciences.
The position requires knowledge of the history of science in colonial and postcolonial contexts. It assumes an interest in material culture and heritage issues, and research experience in Africa.
The position also requires skills in digital humanities, as well as good writing skills in French and English.
Work context
The successful candidate will have an equipped workstation at IMAF (UMR 8171 – CNRS/IRD/EHESS/EPHE/Paris 1/AMU), 5 cours des Humanités, 93300 Aubervilliers), one of the leading French laboratories for areal studies on Africa. He or she will join a community of around a hundred established researchers and lecturer-researchers, young researchers and doctoral students in this field.
The contract is part of the ANR ArchIFAN project, led by IMAF, LADEC (Université Lumière Lyon 2) and CESSMA (Université de Paris, IRD, INALCO) in collaboration with IFAN-CAD (Dakar, Senegal).
The postdoctoral fellow will be supervised by the scientific leaders of the project.
Constraints and risks
As part of his or her missions, the postdoctoral fellow will be expected to regularly visit institutions holding archives produced by IFAN (notably the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris, the Musée d’Aquitaine in Bordeaux and IFAN-CAD in Dakar).
