Job Description

PhD position

There is a vacancy for a PhD Research Fellow in Meteorology related to the moisture transport in extratropical cyclones at the Geophysical Institute at the University of Bergen. The position is affiliated with the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research. The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years with the possibility of a 4th year with career-promoting work (e.g. teaching at the Geophysical Institute).

About the project/work tasks

The PhD project will investigate the moist dynamics of extratropical cyclone families. Focus will be on the origin, processing, and handover of moisture within these cyclone families as well as the associated diabatic impact due to latent heating on the lifecycle of the individual storms as well as of the cyclone family itself. The candidate will investigate the mechanisms by which moisture is drawn into and processed within cyclone families using reanalyses, idealised and realistic model simulations. The project will make use of novel and established water tracing diagnostics, including stable water isotopes. There is also a possibility to work with observational data from aircraft field campaigns and satellites. We are now looking for an engaged and highly qualified PhD candidate to join our collaborative team. As a PhD in the Meteorology group at the Geophysical Institute at University of Bergen, you will also be affiliated with the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research (BCCR). BCCR is the largest climate research centre in the Nordic countries and among the leading centres in Europe. The working environment is highly international with around 200 scientists from 37 countries.

Qualifications and personal qualities

  • Applicants must hold a master’s degree or equivalent education in meteorology, climate dynamics, oceanography, physics, applied mathematics, or related fields. Master students can apply provided they complete their final master exam before 30.06.2025. It is a condition of employment that the master’s degree has been awarded.
  • The candidate must have good knowledge in atmospheric dynamics.
  • Proficiency in scientific coding and data analysis (e.g., Python, MATLAB, R, C++, FORTRAN) is required
  • Ability to actively communicate and co-operate within a larger research team is required.
  • Experience with LINUX environments and analysing large datasets from numerical models is an advantage
  • Experience with numerical tracer diagnostics or stable water isotopes is an advantage
  • Experience in teaching and outreach activities is an advantage
  • Applicants must have good written and oral English skills.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently, creatively, and in a structured manner.

Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.
