We are looking for
Do you want to contribute to safe and responsible scientific research at a leading university? As a biological safety officer (BSO) at the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE) of the RUG, you are the linchpin in safeguarding biological safety within our research and educational environments. You support researchers, advise on legal requirements and contribute to a safe working environment for everyone.
What are you going to do
The BVF is responsible for ensuring safety when working with genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and biological agents. The function consists of supervising activities with micro-organisms, plants and animals.
Important tasks include:
- Contribute to the development of policy at faculty level.
- Advising on the safe and responsible use of GMOs, biological agents and animal by-products.
- Supporting research groups and the educational organization in the management of GMO notifications and projects covered by the Nagoya Protocol.
- Exercising internal supervision and taking action in the event of incidents or dangerous situations.
- Organizing information and training courses such as the Safe Microbiological Techniques course (VMT course).
- Contribute to the Risk Inventory & Evaluation (RI&E) process of the various FSE buildings.
The BVF plays a key role in protecting people and the environment within the Faculty FSE. In this role, you work closely with the other FSE biological safety officer and the biological safety coordinator of the RUG. In addition, you coordinate relevant activities with your HSE colleagues, the ARBO service and the real estate organization.

Job requirements
We are looking for
A team player, expert in genetic modification and biological agents. Do you enjoy advising researchers and do you feel at home in the academic world? Do you see a dynamic and challenging environment as a great opportunity? Then you might be the BVF we are looking for!
Furthermore you have:
- A completed technical HBO+ or WO education.
- Demonstrable experience with genetic laboratory techniques.
- Preferably a qualification as BVF or the willingness to obtain one.
- You are accurate, analytical and have good organizational skills.
- You have strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing, in Dutch and English.

Organization
Working conditions
We offer in accordance with the collective labor agreement for Dutch universities
- A salary depending on education and experience of a minimum of €3,378 (scale 10) to a maximum of €5,331 gross per month for full-time employment.
- The possibility to choose a 36, 38 or 40 hour workweek (assuming a full-time employment contract). The RUG has a generous leave scheme.
- 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus on the annual gross income.
- Good educational activities.
- An appointment of 0.95 fte for a period of one year. Possibly possibilities for an extension.
