Associate senior lecturer in maritime science
Lecturer / Senior Lecturer @Linnaeus University posted 2 days agoJob Description
Welcome to Linnaeus University! Here you’ll meet 2 200 staff members and 40 000 students, all united in following the vision to set knowledge in motion for a sustainable societal development. With us, research and education are conducted with an eye towards the future. Our proximity to the business world, both locally and globally, gives us a wide reach and the ability to create change that makes an impact. All that’s needed is a place where ideas have the space to meet and grow. That’s what we’ve created – and you are invited.
Change starts here!
The Kalmar Maritime Academy, part of the Faculty of Technology, is located right on the waterfront in the heart of Kalmar and has around 500 students, on campus and at a distance. With dedication, new technology and extensive experience, we shape the future leaders in shipping and technical operations. We offer contemporary programmes leading to qualifications as master mariners and marine engineers, alongside training in operations and maintenance technology. Creating opportunities for interaction between students, researchers, and industry is important to us, and we strive to promote greater gender equality among teaching staff and within the sector.
Research in the field of maritime science examines international shipping – its conditions, daily operations, and impact on the environment and human health. Life and work on board ships is a central focus, particularly the interaction between people and between humans and technology.
Our research into working life, organisation, communication, maritime safety, risk management, energy efficiency and the environmental impact of shipping draws on theories and methods from other disciplines within the social sciences, natural sciences and engineering.

Subject area for the position: Maritime science
Location until further notice: Kalmar. Since Linnaeus University is located in both Växjö and Kalmar, travel between the two may be required.
Hours: Full time for four years (50% research and 50% teaching/administration). The position may be extended by up to a maximum of two years if additional time is needed to fulfil the purpose of the appointment due to sick leave, parental leave or other special circumstances.
Start date: Start date as agreed upon.
According to the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance (Chapter 4, Section 12c), an associate senior lecturer should, upon application, be promoted to senior lecturer if they meet the eligibility requirements for such a position and are, following assessment, deemed suitable according to the criteria relevant to the position. Such a promotion results in permanent employment as a senior lecturer. The application for promotion and the assessment must take place during the period of employment as associate senior lecturer.
Job description
The duties span the entire research cycle, beginning with the identification of research challenges through literature reviews or discussions with industry partners. Different research challenges require different research methods, such as case studies, controlled experiments and mixed methods.
The position holder is expected to publish results in international journals and conferences, and to take an active part in the academic community by carrying out academic service, such as organising conferences and performing peer review. Participation in international research networks involving joint project applications and publications is encouraged.
The position also includes teaching, supervision and other departmental duties amounting to approximately 50% of full-time. This part of the role involves course development, examination, and acting as course coordinator for courses related to maritime science within the master mariner and marine engineering programmes, as well as at the 60-credit master’s level. Supervision of degree projects at both bachelor’s and master’s level is also included. Formal pedagogical qualifications, such as training in teaching and learning in higher education and in supervision, are an essential part of the position.
At the start of the appointment, we will create a research and teaching plan together, which will be used to monitor and evaluate progress. The plan will be reviewed midway through the appointment (after approximately two years) to ensure the best possible conditions are in place for meeting the promotion criteria.
Eligibility
To be eligible for employment as an associate senior lecturer, the applicant must hold a doctoral degree in a relevant subject, such as maritime science, work and organisational studies, naval architecture or transport engineering, ergonomics, human-technology interaction, risk management, organisation studies, sociology, psychology or gender studies, or possess equivalent research qualifications. Priority should be given to applicants who have completed their doctoral degree or attained equivalent qualifications no more than five years before the application deadline for the position. However, applicants who obtained their doctorate or equivalent qualifications earlier may also be considered if there are special circumstances. Special circumstances include sick leave, parental leave and other similar situations. (Swedish Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 4, Section 4a)
Eligibility for this position also requires excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Applicants must also have published articles in journals and/or presented papers at established conferences within the field and have experience of research work in national and/or international research projects.
Assessment criteria
Postdoctoral research experience is considered a merit. It is also an advantage if the applicant’s research is relevant to the maritime field. Teaching experience and the ability to teach in Swedish are desirable but not required.
Additional qualifications include professional experience from the maritime sector.
When appointing new teaching staff, the university should select candidates who are deemed to have the best potential to carry out and develop the relevant duties and to contribute to the successful development of the organisation, following a qualitative overall assessment of their competence and proficiency.
In the event of an application for promotion to senior lecturer, the following assessment criteria will apply:
The assessment of research expertise should be guided by the independence, extent and quality of the applicant’s own research.
Teaching proficiency must be demonstrated through teaching experience and should include the development, planning, delivery and evaluation of teaching, as well as supervision and examination. It should also reflect a reflective approach to student learning and to the applicant’s own role as a teacher.
After the four-year period as associate senior lecturer, the candidate is expected to:
- demonstrate independence as a researcher in planning research projects, securing funding, and publishing research
- conduct research in relevant subject areas during the period of employment, which demonstrate development over time and engagement with new areas, and publish at least four articles in international outlets within relevant fields
- maintain a national and international network involving collaboration with academia and society, including:
- participation in and collaboration on research projects
- participation in conferences and other contributions to the academic community
- national and international research collaboration, e.g. through joint projects and publications
- demonstrate ability and initiative in applying for external research funding. At least two such applications must be submitted (preferably as principal applicant)
- compile a teaching portfolio documenting teaching experience, course development and preparation, and pedagogical development at bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral level
- have formal pedagogical qualifications, including training in teaching and learning in higher education and in supervision
- successfully supervise bachelor’s and master’s theses
- be able to collaborate with other researchers and/or experts in related fields, including engaging in interdisciplinary work to develop the knowledge area associated with the position
- provide certification of at least 25 hours of teaching experience in Swedish, preferably in the form of lectures.
