PhD @Linnaeus University posted 2 days agoJob Description
Welcome to Linnaeus University! Here you’ll meet 2 200 staff members and 40 000 students, all united in following the vision to set knowledge in motion for a sustainable societal development. With us, research and education are conducted with an eye towards the future. Our proximity to the business world, both locally and globally, gives us a wide reach and the ability to create change that makes an impact. All that’s needed is a place where ideas have the space to meet and grow. That’s what we’ve created – and you are invited.
Change starts here!
The Faculty of Technology is one of five faculties at Linnaeus University. We bring together the university’s education and research in technical subjects. Our operations are organized into nine departments and a faculty office. We also house the Linnaeus University Centre DISA and two Linnaeus Knowledge Environments: Green Sustainable Development and Digital Transformations. Several of the faculty’s research groups collaborate within the strategic research area of Forest Values.
The Department of Computer Science and Media Technology is responsible for many educational programs at basic and advanced levels within computer science, software engineering, and media technology. Currently, more than 60 staff members work in the department. The department has a strong connection with other departments of Linnaeus University and industrial and public partners.
Subject area for the position: Computer Science with specialization in Web Engineering and Cloud Systems
Location until further notice: Kalmar. Since Linnaeus University is located in both Växjö and Kalmar, travel between the two may be required.
Hours: Full-time employment (100%) until further notice.
Starting date: Starting date as agreed upon. The default form of employment is probationary employment.
Job description
The work duties include the whole research cycle, i.e., from literature reviews and the identification of research challenges, throughout the implementation of software tools and performing benchmarks, to reporting of results and publication in highly ranked journals and conferences in the related areas (web engineering and cloud systems).
In addition, the position holder will teach in courses at different levels (incl. course administration and supervision of thesis projects), be involved in syllabi and curricula development, and be responsible teacher for courses. The teaching tasks relate to subjects of the advertised areas (web engineering and cloud systems), as well as to more general courses in computer science and software development.
The position also involves supervision of doctoral students, advising post-doctoral researchers, active leadership towards the operational work and development of a research group, and attracting external research funding.
Qualifications
Anyone who has demonstrated teaching expertise, and who has been awarded a doctorate in Computer Science (or a closely related field), or who has equivalent academic qualifications, qualifies for the position of senior lecturer.
“Equivalent academic qualifications” generally refers to a degree awarded by a higher education institution abroad that corresponds for the most part to a Swedish doctoral degree in terms of level and quality in Computer Science.
Eligibility for this position requires that the candidate shows documented experience in research in the related areas (web engineering and/or cloud systems) at doctoral level or beyond.
The applicant preferably should have completed training in teaching and learning in higher education, corresponding to the national guidelines provided by the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions.
Assessment criteria
The assessment criteria for appointment as a senior lecturer shall be the degree of the expertise required as a qualification for employment. As much attention shall be given to the assessment of teaching expertise as to the assessment of other required qualifications.
The assessment of research expertise should be guided by the independence, volume, and quality of the candidate’s research.
Teaching expertise should be apparent from pedagogical work, including development, planning, implementation, and evaluation of teaching, as well as supervision and examination. Teaching expertise should furthermore include a reflective approach to students’ learning and to the applicant’s own role as a teacher.
We expect research and teaching experience in Computer Science subjects; Experience in teaching in specific areas such as Web Engineering, Internet-of-Things (IoT), Data Science, Distributed Systems, and Cloud Computing will be considered a bonus.
Further assessment criteria are documented expertise within one or more of the following research/educational topics:
- Programming fundamentals and guiding students through the process of creating and implementing solutions to problems, debugging code, and following code conventions.
- Object-oriented design principles, using UML for object-oriented modeling, and applying common design patterns.
- Web development in both client-side and server-side, including concepts such as RESTful APIs and web security.
- Software engineering and project management, guiding students with agile development methodologies, team collaboration, and project management tools.
- Cloud-native applications and deployment, continuous integration, continuous delivery, and continuous deployment, including server configuration management platforms, container orchestration, and creating scalable software systems.
- Applied data science, integrating machine learning and AI concepts into the software development curriculum, for example by applying data-driven techniques to improve software design and performance, using machine learning algorithms for specific tasks in web development or project management, or using AI for testing and continuous integration.
Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are expected, preferably documented in the form of papers published in well-known journals and/or presented in well-known conferences in the related areas (Web Engineering and Cloud Systems). Teamwork experiences, such as previous work in national/international research projects, should also be documented in the application. Active involvement in writing grant applications is also considered as meriting, as well as experience in supervising first- and second-cycle thesis projects and doctoral students.
Additional assessment criteria
In addition to the criteria established above, the following are considered strong advantages for the candidate:
Collaboration skills: demonstrated skills in making research and education known, available, and useful, in interaction with the surrounding society, for knowledge exchange and mutual learning. The assessment of collaboration skills should be guided by the quality and results of the collaborative work. Collaboration skills should have been demonstrated in integration of third-stream activities into education and research, which should have contributed to an increase in research and educational quality and relevance to societal challenges and demands.
Ability to lead and manage academic work: demonstrated in project or work management in research, as well as in relevant contributions to the academic development of the subject area. The ability to lead and manage pedagogical work should have been demonstrated in management of education, teaching activities, and pedagogical collaboration initiatives.
Management skills: successful experience of management and development of work and staff within academia – that is: successful leadership that has contributed to an including and equal working environment, and efficient goal attainment. Management skills should have been demonstrated through an ability to make decisions on the basis of a holistic view of the organisation, as well as through an ability to promote common ways of working and respectful cooperation. Other skills included among management skills are the ability to attract and keep competence, to engage and inspire co-workers, and to successfully handle conflicts.
Since the subject of computer science is male-dominated, we encourage female applicants. When the university employs new teachers, the choice should fall on those applicants who, based on a qualitative holistic assessment of competence and skills, are considered most likely to successfully perform and develop relevant tasks and contribute to successful development of the organisation. The ability to teach in Swedish is a bonus, but not required.
In the overall assessment of an applicant’s skills, particular significance will be attached to the applicant’s potential to have a successful career as a teacher and researcher.
Last day for application is August 3, 2025.
