Job Description

The Department of Physiology and Pharmacology conducts internationally recognized high-quality research in physiology, pharmacology, anesthesiology and intensive care. The department has approximately 400 active staff, consisting of 30 research groups and 90 doctoral students. Our extensive collaboration with clinics at Karolinska University Hospital provides unique opportunities for translational research in our subjects. The department conducts education at undergraduate and graduate levels, including teaching in several different programs at KI.

Subject description

The main goal is to advance scientific knowledge in radiology, diving physiology and/or hyperbaric medicine through innovative research, high-quality teaching and mentoring. The senior researcher will lead and contribute to research initiatives addressing diagnostic image analysis, lung physiology and hyperbaric oxygen therapy of transnational importance.

Your role

The role of senior researcher includes;

  • Teaching and course development, such as preparing and delivering lectures, seminars and workshops in radiology, respiratory physiology and hyperbaric medicine for medical students, postgraduate students and courses for continuing medical education.
  • Independently conduct and administer research projects, including clinical trials and translational studies, in areas such as diagnostic imaging, pulmonary physiology and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Publish high-impact research in peer-reviewed journals and present results at national and international conferences.
  • Contribute to the department’s strategic development in the field of environmental physiology, and be very active in seeking research grants in the field.
  • Supervise students at undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral levels, including AT physicians and clinical researchers, and support their development as researchers and clinicians.
  • Collaborate with clinicians to integrate research findings into patient care, particularly in radiology and hyperbaric medicine applications.

Eligibility requirements

For employment as a senior researcher at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements stated in Guidelines for employment other than teaching positions at Karolinska Institutet are applied in relation to the established employment profile.

Eligible for employment as a senior researcher is someone who, in addition to having completed a doctoral degree or having a foreign degree that is considered equivalent to a Swedish doctoral degree, has demonstrated scientific proficiency. The applicant must be a research leader and have their own established research line. The applicant must also have documented scientific production of high quality with particular attention to the last six years, have the potential to drive research forward vigorously and be nationally and internationally recognized. The applicant must also have long-term and good, preferably external, funding and have demonstrated the potential to obtain additional external funding. The applicant must also have experience in teaching and supervision and have demonstrated good leadership skills.

The final candidate for this position has a medical degree, a doctorate in physiology, radiology or related fields.

Assessment criteria

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has demonstrated

  • Good expertise in radiology, with a focus on thoracic imaging, diagnostic techniques (e.g. MRI, CT, HRCT) and their applications in pulmonary and diving-related conditions.
  • Documented experience in research in diving and hyperbaric medicine.
  • Experience in obtaining competitive research grants (e.g. VR, Office of Naval Research or equivalent).
  • Documented scientific success with scientific works in international journals with high impact.
  • Has specialist skills or equivalent in the areas of radiology, hyperbaric medicine or similar.

It is an advantage that the applicant has demonstrated

  • Experience in course development and teaching at undergraduate, doctoral and postdoctoral levels, preferably in radiology, physiology or related fields
  • Leadership experience in academic and/or clinical settings, such as leading clinical programs, being the head of clinical departments, and/or serving in decision-making scientific forums.
