The Johann Friedrich Blumenbach Institute of Zoology and Anthropology, Department of Animal Evolution and Biodiversity, at the Georg August University of Göttingen, is seeking to fill a permanent position as
a zoological taxidermist (f/m/d)
at the earliest possible date , working 100% of the regular weekly working hours (currently 39.80 hours/week). Remuneration will be based on salary group 10 TV-L (German public service pay scale).
The zoological collections of the Georg August University of Göttingen comprise over 100,000 taxidermied animals, including numerous type specimens of newly described species. The collection covers the entire diversity of the animal kingdom—from wet mounts and needle-mounted insects to large-format skeletal specimens—and serves both research and teaching. A new permanent exhibition as part of the “Biodiversity Museum” project is currently being planned. A completed vocational training with a focus on biological preparation or a university degree in biology (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or diploma) combined with relevant experience working with museum zoological collections is
required . Good biological, systematic, and anatomical expertise is essential, as is experience in the museum collection context. Proficiency in common office applications and database-supported documentation is required. Manual dexterity, physical resilience—particularly when lifting and carrying loads in accordance with occupational health and safety regulations—and the willingness to work on lifting platforms are essential, as is a strong sense of responsibility when handling fragile and historically valuable collection objects.
In-depth knowledge of various preparation techniques, model making, and the use of suitable materials is desirable. Furthermore, a structured and reliable approach to documentation, databases, and the digital recording of collection data is desirable. Communication and teamwork skills are desirable, and good spoken English skills are helpful.
The area of responsibilityinvolves taxidermy work with a special focus on invertebrates, supplemented by conservation work on vertebrates, including skeletal preparation. Responsibilities include the conservation of the zoological collection, as well as the planning and implementation of measures for the safeguarding and restoration of historical specimens and typical specimens. Furthermore, participation in the internal organization of the collection and the maintenance and further development of the associated databases is expected. The development, testing, and application of innovative techniques, methods, and materials for conservation, restoration, and taxidermy contributes to the long-term preservation and expansion of the collection holdings. Furthermore, the field of activity includes support in the preparation and implementation of exhibitions and educational formats, as well as the transfer of taxidermy knowledge through training and continuing education programs.
