About the project:

The position is affiliated with the ongoing research project DARKLAX: “The Dark Side of Sustainability: Norway and the Rise and Fall of Salmon Farming in Chile. A Transnational History of the Future (1970-2030)” directed by Associate Professor Ernesto Semán. The Funding comes from the FRIPRO grant from the Norwegian Research Council.

DARKLAX focuses on the transformation of the salmon farming industry in Chile since the 1970s, in terms of environmental, social, gender and technological changes. A transnational perspective is a central part of the conceptual framework of DARKLAX, locating the Chilean South as the locus of global forces.

Work tasksand responsibilities:

The researcher’s role is to develop two visual essays/documentaries about central aspects of the history of salmon farming in Chile:

  • Visual essay 1 will be on the novel expansion of salmon population in the Southern Hemisphere after the escape of farmed salmon into the wild.
  • Visual essay 2 will be on the way technologies and gender have shaped the relation between labour and nature in the salmon farming industry from its origins in the 1970s until today.

The main responsibility of the researcher is to conduct historical research, gather evidence, and conduct analysis on the findings in order to create these visual essays.

The researcher will work in close collaboration with the UiB Learning Lab, which is contracted to provide the technical production and editing support for the films. The researcher will also work with the Environmental Humanities Research Group on the conceptual aspects of the films.

The researcher will help coordinate filming both in Norway and in Latin America. For the overall design of the film’s conceptual and historical perspective, as well as for the logistics and realization of the film, the researcher will work with DARKLAX’s three main partner institutions: Universidad Diego Portales in Chile, Universidad de San Martín in Argentina, and the Arne Næss Center for Ecology and Philosophy in Norway.

In addition to the abovementioned tasks and responsibilities, the researcher will be expected to submit the films for publication in top academic journals, and to relevant prize calls, film festivals, etc., and help design and participate in DARKLAX’s first international conference and retreat to be held in May 2026. The researcher is also expected to assist with the project’s other various activities as relevant.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • The applicant must hold a Norwegian master’s degree or an equivalent foreign degree in either Latin American studies, history, or literature; film studies; environmental studies; or other relevant humanities fields. A PhD in these fields is desired but not required.
  • Demonstrated experience in producing visual essays/documentaries, including at least one visual essay/documentary published in an academic journal.
  • The applicant must be fluent in both written and oral English and Spanish.
  • Extensive knowledge of Latin American history and culture.
  • Experience with and publications on gender dynamics are considered an advantage.
  • Knowledge of Norwegian is considered an advantage.
  • The researcher must be experienced in current historical methodologies, gender theory, and theories related to animal studies, sustainability, and the Anthropocene, and bring these frameworks to their essays.

In the assessment of applicants, in addition to qualifications, emphasis will be placed on strategic academic considerations, motivation, collaboration skills, and personal suitability.

The position as researcher demands that the successful applicant has their daily workplace at the Department of Foreign Languages, University of Bergen, and complies with the guidelines that apply to the position at all times.

  • Gross annual salary of NOK 605 000 – 670 000 (code 1108) in a full-time position. Further salary increases will be based on seniority in the position. A higher salary may be considered for particularly well-qualified applicants.
