Loughborough English is a centre of excellence for research in contemporary literature and culture. The Contemporary Research Group welcomes research projects that align with our broad and diverse research specialisms, asking critical questions about how the contemporary is experienced, theorised, produced and contested across contemporary culture.
The Contemporary Research Group houses research in late twentieth- and twenty-first century literature, theatre, film, TV, popular culture, and theory. As well as contemporary British literature, we have strengths in U.S. literature and film and African American culture, Irish literature, transnational star studies, life writing and narrative non-fiction, contemporary feminist theory, age studies, neo-Victorianism, literary prize culture and book history, utopian and dystopian writing, climate fiction, and animal studies. Research projects should correspond with the research strengths of the Contemporary Research Group.
The Contemporary Research Group are Siân Adiseshiah (contemporary theatre, age studies, utopianism); Barbara Cooke (creative psychogeography, generative criticism, post-colonial literature); Jennifer Cooke (theories of feminism, gender, sexuality and care); Andrew Dix (US and African American literature, film, and popular culture); Kerry Featherstone (neuro-pedagogy, creative writing and contemporary poetry); Clare Hutton (Irish literature, book history, and literary prizes, especially the Booker); Brian Jarvis (US film, fiction, and visual culture); Paul Jenner (Stanley Cavell and ordinary language criticism, the nonhuman, contemporary U.S. literature); Sara Read (contemporary historical fiction);Claire O’Callaghan (Sarah Waters, neo-Victorianism, contemporary historical fiction).

Entry requirements for United Kingdom
A 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent international qualification) in a related subject.
English language requirements

Fees and funding
Tuition fees for 2024-25 entry
UK fee
£4,786 Full-time degree per annum
International fee
£21,500 Full-time degree per annum
Fees for the 2024-25 academic year apply to projects starting in October 2024, January 2025, April 2025 and July 2025.
Tuition fees cover the cost of your teaching, assessment and operating University facilities such as the library, IT equipment and other support services. University fees and charges can be paid in advance and there are several methods of payment, including online payments and payment by instalment. Fees are reviewed annually and are likely to increase to take into account inflationary pressures.
