Context of the Job: Under the general direction of the faculty investigator, the CSHEL Laboratory Coordinator I performs research using marine geology and other accepted geophysical survey procedures and techniques. The Laboratory Coordinator I maintains the general operation of the laboratory, including preparation of sensors and platforms and items for field work as well as ordering of materials and supplies.
Major Responsibilities:
- Participates in and provides technical support for various projects performed by members of the CSHEL. Helps instruct students and others (e.g. visiting scientists) about routine techniques (e.g., safety, processing procedures) used in the laboratory.
- Applies various standard laboratory methods associated with marine geology to accomplish a variety of research assignments. Techniques used include grain size analysis and organic extractions.
- Participates in field work (e.g., geophysical surveys and boat/beach operations in the Delaware Bay, Delmarva Peninsula, and in remote locations domestic and abroad) on an as-needed basis.
- Prepares sensors (e.g. multibeam, ADCP, AUV, ASVs) following standard CSHEL procedures.
- Prepares and processes hydrodynamic and geophysical data for analyses. Records experimental procedures, measurements, observations and results of tests.
- Presents project results to the Principal Investigator and/or other members of the research group.
- Maintains necessary records for reports.
- Maintains and operates standard laboratory equipment such as multibeam echosounder, ADCP, sub-bottom profiler, GPR, and IMU sensors.
- Helps prepare and maintain standard operating procedures for use by students and visiting scientists.
- Responsible for requisition and inventory of supplies and/or equipment.
- Assists the PI in preparation of scientific reports, publications, and proposals.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree with two years of experience in laboratory work or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree in a Marine Science or Geology preferred.
- Experience with grain size laboratory techniques for both cohesive and non-cohesive sediments.
- In-depth knowledge of laboratory techniques, procedures, instrumentation, and principles.
- Highly organized, quick learner, and the ability to work independently and with a team.
- Proficient in the use of computers and basic office software applications.
- Ability to implement assigned projects, analyze information and draw conclusions.
- Ability to work independently from written and oral instructions.
- Ability to train and instruct others.
- Ability to work well with faculty and students.
- Ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to collect, process, and interpret geophysical data including AUV side-scan, underwater color images, multibeam sonar, and hydrodynamic wave and current sensors.
- Direct experience and ability working with Iver3 AUV, Norbit multibeam, Marine Magnetics Magnetometer, and RTK GPS systems is essential.
- Incumbent will work out of the Lewes RDL lab. Travel domestically is a requirement.
- Direct experience in SonarWiz, Qimera, BoB magnetometer, Matlab, and other advanced software for the analysis of sonar and hydrodynamic data.

Special Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 50 lb. with or without assistance.
- USCG small boat handling certificate or ability to obtain such qualification.
