Job Description

The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL), with approximately 600 employees, is part of the ETH Domain. It focuses on the sustainable use and protection of the environment, as well as the responsible management of natural hazards.
The Forest and Soil Ecology research unit investigates the influence of environmental changes on the functioning of forest ecosystems. In the Soil Biogeochemistry group, we are seeking  a
As part of an SNSF-funded project (PI: Peter Waldner), we are investigating the nitrogen balance in forest ecosystems in Europe. To this end, we aim to measure the stable isotope signature of nitrates and ammonium in precipitation and soil solutions from a large number of samples collected during long-term forest monitoring. The main tasks include the extraction of nitrate and ammonium from liquid samples and the determination of leaf properties. All methods and measurements will be carried out in state-of-the-art laboratories at WSL Birmensdorf. In addition, occasional field work in Swiss forests may be required.

 

You have recently completed or are about to complete a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Environmental Sciences, Forestry, Biology, Chemistry, or a related field. You are comfortable handling and documenting large sample volumes, and you are already familiar with laboratory work. Your independent, structured, and precise work style, coupled with your strong organizational skills, make you ideally suited for this position. You also have good English skills.
