The Department of Internal Medicine and Clinical Nutrition, at the Institute of Medicine, conducts research in several different areas, such as osteoporosis, endocrinology, hematology, gastroenterology, hypertension, respiratory medicine and allergology, and clinical nutrition focusing on body composition and energy metabolism. The research is conducted in close collaboration with health care at both the Sahlgrenska University Hospital and Mölndal Hospital.

The Department of Internal Medicine and Clinical Nutrition, at the Institute of Medicine, conducts research in several different areas within internal medicine. The present postdoctoral position will be at the Sahlgrenska Osteoporosis Centre (SOC), and the researchers at this centre were first to demonstrate that the gut microbiota regulates the bone mass.

The candidate will be part of a project financed by the Wallenberg Centre for Molecular and Translational Medicine (WCMTM) at the University of Gothenburg. The project is also financed by an ERC advanced grant to Professor Claes Ohlsson. Within the project, the researchers will determine the role of bacteria, fungi, and viruses for a variety of clinical phenotypes. Using large Nordic cohorts, the project has access to more than 34.000 study participants with metagenome sequence data and information on many clinical phenotypes.  Thus, the project is uniquely tailored to determine the possible causality of human gut microbiota for human diseases.

Osteoporosis is a common skeletal disease characterized by low bone mass leading to an increased risk of fractures. Although the consequences of osteoporosis are well known, the underlying mechanisms are still unclear. The overall objective of the announced postdoctoral position is primarily to investigate the role of the gut microbiota composition for bone and muscle health, but also for other diseases. The aim of the research is to identify more efficient and safe treatment of patients with osteoporosis and other common diseases.

Duties

The candidate will work with translational osteoporosis research at the Sahlgrenska Osteoporosis Centre at Gothenburg University. More specifically, the candidate will be responsible for the bioinformatic/biostatistical work within the project. The candidate will perform observational and causal (Mendelian Randomization) association studies in large population cohorts. In addition, the candidate will be responsible for bioinformatic analyses starting from experimental studies. The candidate will handle detailed metagenome sequence data including both taxonomy and functionality. The candidate will integrate different omics data and will be responsible for machine learning techniques within the project.

Eligibility

To be eligible for appointment as a postdoc, the applicant is required to have a doctoral degree in a relevant subject, or a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. This eligibility requirement must be met before the employment decision is made.

In the first instance, those who have completed their degree no more than three years prior to the end of the application period shall be considered. Those who have completed their degree more than three years prior to the end of the application period may also be considered in the first instance if special grounds exist. Special grounds relate to leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, commissions of trust within union organisations, service within the defence services or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or service/assignment relevant to the subject area.

Assessment criteria

We are looking for a person with good experience in bioinformatics/biostatistical work.

Previous experience of working with large scale -omics studies and/or metagenome sequence data is a merit. As we operate in an international environment, the applicant is expected to have good knowledge of communicating in speech and writing in English. Great emphasis is placed on personal qualities, such as the ability to work independently, and organizational skills.
