A Glimpse of the Job

The Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator manages environmental related activities to maintain compliance. Assists with the implementation of the Environmental Management system, facilitation of environmental committees ensures environmental compliance at off-campus AgriLife locations through inspections, development of an environmental management system, facilitation of an environmental committee, environmental program development, and management of the hazardous waste program. The position adheres to requirements to ensure compliance with applicable Federal, State, and local regulatory agencies, as well as Texas A&M University System (TAMUS) policies and regulations.

 

Essential Duties/Tasks:

EHS Program Management Support

  • Provides direct support to the oversight process of environmental compliance with EPA, Clean Water Act (CWA), clean Air Act (CAA), Toxic Substances Control act (TSCA) and associated State rules and regulations.
  • Contributes to the development and update of environmental programs (e.g. stormwater, SPCC, and supervises implementation.  This includes compliance requirements, training, inspections, sampling, and compliance assistance.
  • Provides compliance recommendations and explanations of EHS program procedures.
  • Develops, manages, and ensures compliance of environmental programs such as a Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) plan.
  • Determines other environmental programs as needed.

Compliance and Inspection

  • Coordinates regular inspections and audits of facilities and ensures compliance.
  • Provides reports, letters, information, and support to ensure correction of related violations, inadequacies, objectives, programs, etc. as required by regulations and permits requirements.
  • Acts as liaison with the TCEQ and EPA as required or needed for environmental compliance.

 

Training and Documentation

  • Presents programs, trainings, and briefings to personnel and various organizations on support and implementation of hazardous waste and environmental programs.
  • Manages comprehensive manuals, guides, checklists, presentations, procedures, and policies for programs.
  • The position will also require, on average, bi-monthly travel throughout the state of Texas.  Must be able to walk throughout the facilities for several hours at a time.

 

Coordinate Environmental Management System (EMS)

  • Coordinates an EMS for Texas A&M AgriLife in compliance with System Policy.
  • This includes but not limited to developing an EMS committee that meets as required, establishing environmental goals and objectives, and submission of the TAMUS annual report.

 

Chemical Inventory and Hazardous Waste

  • Assists with managing the Hazardous Waste program for compliance with AgriLife Procedures.
  • Assists the centers with generator status requirements, waste determination, and disposal coordination in compliance with federal and state regulations.
  • Compile workplace chemical inventories for annual Tier II reporting.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Six years of experience in an environmental health and safety field or related.

 

Preferred Licenses and Certifications

  • Class “C” vehicle operator’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • CHMM.
  • Knowledge of EPA environmental and hazardous waste regulations.
  • Knowledge of Environmental Manager Systems (EMS).
  • Knowledge of spreadsheet and word processing software.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of environmental safety and health rules, regulations, and standards.
  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

 

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to tolerate moderate exposure to extreme temperature, dust, dirt, fumes, smoke, loud noises and chemical substances.
  • The position will also require, on average, bi-monthly travel throughout the state of Texas.
  • Must be able to travel throughout the facilities for several hours at a time.
