The Department of Electromechanical Engineering in the Faculty of Applied Engineering is looking for a full-time (100%)  doctoral scholarship holder in the field of computer vision for biomedical inspection

Position

  • You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis in the field of computer vision for biomedical inspection.
  • This project focuses on developing AI-driven solutions to improve perforator mapping through dynamic infrared thermography (DIRT) in breast reconstruction surgeries.
  • The core of the project is the integration of AI techniques with advanced infrared imaging to enhance the detection and evaluation of perforators—critical blood vessels used in Deep Inferior Epigastric artery Perforator (DIEP) flap surgeries. By improving the precision of perforator selection, the project aims to minimize risks of tissue necrosis and optimize surgical outcomes. You will work on the development of machine learning algorithms that analyze thermal data and predict vascular performance, significantly contributing to the automation of medical imaging processes.
  • More info can be found at https://invilab.be/research/perforator-mapping-in-breast-reconstruction
  • You will publish scientific articles related to the research project.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for the Department of Electromechanical Engineering.
  • You will support the execution of projects on imaging with the industry.
  • You will assist in the supervision of Master’s students.

Profile

  • You hold a Master degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or you will have obtained it by the time you start work.
  • You have knowledge in machine learning for vision. Hands-on experience with image acquisitions and different types of cameras (visible, infrared) is highly valued.
  • You can demonstrate excellent study results.
  • You have good written and spoken communication skills. You can speak and write fluently in English. Knowledge of the Dutch language is not required (spoken nor written).
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.

What we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed once for another two-year period.
  • The planned start date is 1stJanuary 2025 or as soon as possible after that date.
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders
  • You will receive ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
  • You will do most of your work at Campus Groenenborger in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
