General Notes

Position is a one year appointment with possibility of extension based on funding and performance. The position is in Port Aransas, Texas. The University of Texas Marine Science Institute (UTMSI) is seeking a full-time Research Scientist Associate III. Candidates who obtained PhD within three years can be considered as Postdoc Fellow. The successful candidate will be involved in dynamic research activities in the research lab of Dr. Zhanfei Liu.

The candidate will also have the freedom to develop their own research projects. The research in Liu Lab focuses on understanding sources, fates and transformation of natural and anthropogenic organic matter, such as dissolved and particulate organic matter, petroleum hydrocarbons, and micro- and nanoplastics. The Liu Lab is well equipped with state-of-the-art analytical instruments, such as high-resolution liquid chromatography mass spectrometry, pyrolysis coupled with gas chromatography mass spectrometry, and infrared spectroscopy etc.

Responsibilities

· Conduct research on micro- and nanoplastics

· Perform sample analysis using different analytical techniques

· Help Mentor other lab members, including graduate and undergraduate students

· Prepare data for publication

· Present research results to national and international conferences

Required qualifications

Incumbent must have received their M.S. or Ph.D. degree in in Environmental Chemistry, Marine Biogeochemistry, or related disciplines.

Preferred qualifications

Broad expertise in environmental chemistry in aquatic environments. Highly desirable qualifications include experience in plastic aging in the environment, and experience in using advanced analytical tools, such as gas/liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry, and analytical pyrolysis etc.

Salary Range

$42,228+ commensurate with experience

Working conditions

· Work is primarily lab- and office-based.

· May include field work

· May include travel between collaborating labs
