The John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) at Harvard University seeks to appoint a full-time Senior Lecturer in Data Science with an expected start date of July 1, 2025. The successful applicant will be responsible for teaching three courses for the Data Science master’s program each year, and have administrative and advising duties within the master’s program including advising students’ thesis research projects, reviewing graduate applications, and developing new courses. The position is for five years and renewal is contingent upon review.

Basic Qualifications 

Candidates are required to have a doctoral degree in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Physical Sciences, or Social Sciences with a focus on computational methods by the time the position begins.

Additional Qualifications    

We seek applicants with a strong background in Data Science and a sophisticated understanding of graduate teaching, learning and curricular issues generally. Evidence that the applicant is an exceptional teacher is an important qualification. Candidates should meet one of these criteria:

Demonstrated that they are exceptional teachers and have taught within the tenured associate or full professor ranks at a university or peer undergraduate institution, with a commensurate scholarly record.

OR

Demonstrated record of national leadership in innovation in pedagogy, with outstanding promise of continuing contribution, and in addition are exceptional teachers.

  1. Teaching/advising statement (describing the candidate’s teaching philosophy and practices as well as their approach to creating a learning environment in which every student is encouraged to ask questions and share their ideas.

Teaching and advising materials (e.g., teaching chart listing courses taught in reverse chronological order [please indicate which, if any, courses were taught remotely, whether partially or in full, due to the COVID-19 pandemic]; representative syllabi; teaching evaluations; list of students for whom the candidate has had primary advising responsibility).
  3. One of the following statements: Research statement, or statement expanding on demonstrated record of national leadership in innovation in pedagogy.
  4. Service statement describing efforts to strengthen academic communities (e.g., the candidate’s department, institution, and/or professional societies).
  5. Names and contact information of 3 referees, who will be asked by a system-generated email to upload a letter of recommendation once the candidate’s application has been submitted. Three letters of recommendation are required, and the application is considered complete only when at least three letters have been received.
