Project description

Third-cycle subjectTransport Science

The focus of the project is to integrate societal impact assessment of transport solutions with travel behavior models. Travel behaviour models and societal impact assessment methods are built separately and often need particular expertise to synthesize and streamline the findings. This project will address this issue in an effort to explore and develop integrated assessment models with AI. It will address how new technology based solutions (e.g. CAVs, EVs) and nuanced policy interventions (e.g. restricting fossil fuel vehicle use, reducing car parking, introducing carpooling) impact sustainability outcomes, specifically behavioural adaptation, emission targets and equity goals. The methodological approach will be a combination of theory driven and data driven models to build theory driven AI systems. Application of estimates like consumer surplus, value of travel time, demand elasticities will be discussed in the process of critical literature review and model development. The use of big data from traffic censors and social media data mining will be explored.

Empirical evidence will be documented in scientific publications and disseminated with stakeholders beyond academia. The candidate will collaborate with other doctoral students in the research group to build on existing accessibility indices, agent based simulation model and digital twins

Supervisor: Fariya Sharmeen, is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission.
