St. John’s Master of Arts (M.A.) program in Theology combines the academic rigor of a world-class university with lively concern for informed and effective pastoral ministry in the twenty-first century Church. The program is flexible enough to fit the needs of those interested in pursuing research degrees, professional ministry, high school teaching, or parish service.
As a master’s student in Theology at St. John’s, you examine the richness of the Catholic faith and its theological heritage in the light of modern human experience. Our program provides an environment of academic excellence flexible enough to meet the needs of those interested in pursuing research degrees, professional ministry, or parish service. We encourage high academic achievement and heightened sensitivity to the needs for social justice and peace in the world around us.
Master’s Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,
Applicants for the M.A. in Theology normally must have a bachelor’s degree which includes 24 credits in theology, philosophy, or related subjects, and an overall B (3.0) average in their undergraduate studies. Any deficiencies in preparation may require you to take supplementary course work as a condition for admission, as determined by the department.
Two letters of recommendation (preferably from a professor who can speak to your ability to perform graduate-level work).
A personal statement of 300-500 words in length, describing your academic background and interest in studying theology. The statement also should address how pursuing this degree connects with your professional and personal goals.
Master’s Funding Coverage,
Full-time students who are awarded the below scholarships must take a minimum of nine credits in both the fall and spring semesters. Part-time students must take a minimum of six credits in both the fall and spring semesters to be considered eligible. International students must take a minimum of nine credits in both the fall and spring semesters for eligibility. Changes in School/College, program, and/or term may impact scholarship eligibility. Funding may be limited; therefore, the timing of application submission is considered. You are encouraged to apply early. Fast-track, pathway, and combined degree students are not eligible for many of these awards.
Awards range from $3,000 to $9,000. The admission application is used to determine merit scholarship eligibility automatically; no additional application is required. Scholarships are awarded based on your academic ability, School/College, and program of study. You are notified of your award in your acceptance letter.
Students accepted into the M.S. in Physician Assistant degree program cannot be considered for any merit awards. Several other programs (i.e., M.S. in Actuarial Science, M.S. in Enterprise Risk Management, M.S. in Risk Management and Risk Analytics, and M.S. in Library and Information Science) are not considered for this award as they offer departmental merit scholarships. Students accepted into doctoral and advanced certificate programs are not eligible for merit awards.

Two letter(s) of recommendation from instructors in the proposed area of specialization or other qualified individuals as designated by the school, division, or program to which the candidate is applying. The number of recommendations may differ by program.
Personal statement describing your reason for pursuing graduate study and leadership objectives in 300 to 350 words. Your statement of goals should briefly, but meaningfully, introduce yourself and describe what you hope to achieve by earning a graduate degree at St. John’s. For example, applicants may address such topics as why they chose St. John’s, what professional steps they plan to take after earning their degree, and the way that they can contribute to the graduate community if accepted.
