Overview
This project will create a new tool for measuring relationships and sexuality outcomes in children and young people with intellectual disability
Background:
Intellectual disability (ID) involves significant limitations in intellectual and adaptive functioning from childhood. Children and Young People (CYP) with ID often struggle with understanding and remembering information, including topics on sexual health and relationships. They face higher risks of unsafe sexual behaviour, unplanned pregnancies, and sexually transmitted infections than their peers without ID.
Aim:
Develop and test a novel tool to assess relationships and sexuality outcomes in CYP with ID.
Methodology:
A systematic scoping review will identify existing relationship and sexuality education (RSE) measurement tools for typically developing CYP. Data from the ‘RESIDE’ project, involving interviews with CYP with ID, parents, and professionals, will be re-examined to inform topic selection. The research team will create and validate questions with 250 CYP with ID from UK special schools, testing reliability through internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha) and test-retest reliability with 40 participants.
Expected Outcomes:
This project aims to deliver a validated tool for assessing relationships and sexuality outcomes in CYP with ID, addressing a significant gap in current measurement practices.
