Do you want to work with the marine carbon cycle, with the support of competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Do you want an employer that invests in sustainable employment and offers safe, favorable working conditions? Welcome to apply for employment as a researcher at Uppsala University.

The Department of Geosciences is very broad in terms of knowledge and was created through the merger of five previously independent departments. The Department of Geology, the Department of Physical Geography and the Department of Paleontology were merged in 1992. Six years later, the Department of Meteorology and the Department of Geophysics were added. This means that we are today one of Europe’s most comprehensive geoscience departments and we conduct education and research both in Uppsala and in Visby.

LUVAL is a large research program that is divided into three main areas; air, water, and landscape. We study weather and climate and the effects of climate change; water and environmental pollution, and glaciology and the processes that shape the Earth’s surface. Our research takes place both in the field and in laboratories, and much of our research revolves around climate issues. read more here: LUVAL

The service is part of the GreenFeedBack ( Greenhouse gas fluxes and Earth system Feedbacks ) project, funded within the Horizon Europe framework. GreenFeedBakc is led by Aarhus University with a consortium of partners that brings together knowledge from field measurements and modeling. The aim is to increase knowledge about greenhouse gas fluxes in the climate system, with a focus on terrestrial, marine and aquatic ecosystems at higher latitudes. Questions are about the response and feedbacks between climate change and ecosystems.

Job duties

The current research position focuses on the marine carbon cycle, how it is affected by, and feedbacks to, climate change. We will use the global climate model EC-Earth and implement model components developed in other parts of the project and perform simulations to understand the sensitivity of the system and the response to climate change. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with colleagues from Aarhus University, as well as other partners within the consortium.

Qualification requirements

For employment as a researcher, you must have a PhD, or a foreign degree that is considered equivalent to a PhD in meteorology, oceanography, environmental science, biogeochemistry, computer science, statistics or equivalent. You are expected to be able to handle and analyze large databases and results from simulations with climate models. A good understanding of spoken and written English is a requirement.

Desirable/meritorious in other respects

Understanding of atmospheric/ocean dynamics is an asset, as well as experience in numerical modeling of atmospheric and/or marine systems, preferably with a focus on feedback mechanisms. Experience in using EC-Earth or similar coupled modeling systems is also an asset.

About the employment

The employment is limited in time, 12 months. The scope is full-time. Entry 2025-04-01  or as agreed. Location: Uppsala

Information about the position can be obtained from: Professor Anna Rutgersson, +46701679044, anna.rutgersson@met.uu.se

Welcome with your application no later than March 3, 2025 , UFV-PA 2024/4468.
