About the department

The Solid State Physics Department is part of the Department of Materials Science at the Ångström Laboratory. At the department, we work with both basic and applied research. The research is related to energy and environmental issues, as well as to life science applications within our various research areas. We primarily investigate the physical and chemical properties of nanomaterials and new materials, which can, for example, be used for thin films for smart windows, for developing gas sensors, photocatalytic coatings and spintronics, or for biomagnetic applications and new magnetic materials for green energy technology.

Project description

The project concerns the fabrication of new memory devices using composite materials. The aim is to design new material combinations and create hybrid structures that can be used as resistance memories. This includes thin film growth using pulsed laser deposition. The interesting materials are combinations of ternary oxides and two-dimensional materials. The project also includes in-depth investigations of the memory devices’ ability to switch from high to low resistance and their magnetic properties.

Job duties

The main task within the research project described above is to conduct basic and applied research with a focus on the fabrication of memory devices and their in-depth electrical characterization. The work also involves, independently or together with others, working on:

  • carry out structural and morphological characterization of the devices using state-of-the-art diffraction and microscopy techniques
  • perform electrical transport measurements of the films

You are expected to work safely and independently in a lab environment as well as work effectively in a large multidisciplinary group of physicists, chemists and materials scientists.

In addition, communication of research results through scientific articles in well-established scientific journals and presentations at international conferences are also included as important aspects of the position.

Qualification requirements

PhD in physics or materials science, or a similar field.

We require documented knowledge and several years of research experience in:

  • Thin film growth using PLD
  • Electrical transport measurements
  • Solid-phase synthesis
  • Thin film characterization

We require good oral and written English skills as well as excellent knowledge of scientific writing.

Desirable/meritorious in other respects

Experience in one or more of the following areas is an advantage:

  • Strongly correlated electron oxide systems
  • Raman spectroscopy
  • X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy
  • Atomic force microscopy

We place great importance on your personal qualities such as the ability to lead and run projects while being able to interact with other researchers. You must be goal-oriented, structured and able to work effectively both individually and in a group.

When assessing applications, special emphasis will be placed on applicants’ ability to publish scientific work in international journals and to give presentations at scientific meetings.

Your application should include:

  • A short letter describing yourself, why you are interested in this project and why you are suitable for this position
  • CV (max. 2 pages)
  • Copy of doctoral degree, master’s degree (or equivalent) and course grades
  • Publication list. Mark the most relevant publications for the position and comment on what you have contributed to these publications.
  • Names and contact details of at least two people who have accepted to be references for you. It should also be clear what your relationship has been to each referee.

We will continuously read application documents and call for interviews during the application period.

About the employment:

The employment is limited to 12 months. The scope is 100%. Entry date 2025-09-01 or as agreed. Location: Uppsala.
