The Office of Information Technology at the Dell Medical School is seeking a Principal Infrastructure Engineer to drive innovation and transformation within its IT infrastructure. This is a critical role responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining robust, scalable, and highly available infrastructure services to ensure optimal performance, security, and resiliency. The successful candidate will collaborate across multiple teams to develop infrastructure solutions aligned with business objectives while ensuring regulatory compliance and industry best practices.

Purpose

The Principal Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for the planning, design, and engineering of enterprise-level infrastructure and platforms related to compute, storage, and virtualization technologies. This role also provides strategic advice and guidance to functional teams and has broad, advanced technical experience. The Principal Infrastructure Engineer performs technical planning, architecture development, and modification of specifications for datacenter and cloud infrastructure, which includes developing specifications for new IT computing products and service offerings, assessing compatibility and integration of products/services proposed as standards, and ensuring an integrated architecture across interdependent technologies. The role also involves collaborating with senior executives to drive segment or enterprise-wide functional strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement enterprise infrastructure solutions, including compute, storage, virtualization, and cloud services.
  • Manage and optimize on-premises and cloud-based infrastructure to ensure availability, scalability, and performance.
  • Develop and maintain infrastructure automation strategies using scripting and configuration management tools.
  • Ensure security and compliance adherence across all infrastructure systems and platforms.
  • Oversee backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity planning.
  • Define infrastructure standards and best practices to optimize system efficiency and reduce operational costs.
  • Lead major infrastructure transformation projects, including datacenter migrations, cloud integrations, and infrastructure modernization initiatives.
  • Monitor, analyze, and troubleshoot system performance issues.
  • Collaborate with network, security, and application teams to ensure seamless integration of infrastructure services.
  • Develop and maintain infrastructure documentation, policies, and procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a technical or scientific field. 8+ years of experience in infrastructure engineering, including compute, storage, AD, and virtualization technologies. Experience designing and implementing enterprise-level IT infrastructure solutions. Proficiency with virtualization technologies such as VMware, Hyper-V, or KVM. Expertise in cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud). Strong knowledge of automation tools such as Ansible, Terraform, or PowerShell scripting. Understanding of IT security best practices and compliance requirements. Experience in disaster recovery planning and execution. Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex infrastructure issues. Strong communication skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s Degree in a related technical field. Industry certifications such as VMware VCP, AWS Certified Solutions Architect, or Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect. Enterprise Server Administration (8+ years): Experience managing Windows Server and Linux systems in a healthcare IT environment. Virtualization & Hypervisors (7+ years): Expertise in VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, or KVM for server virtualization and workload optimization. Cloud Infrastructure Management (5+ years): Experience with Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud for hybrid and multi-cloud hospital IT environments. Storage Area Networks (SAN) & NAS (7+ years): Working with enterprise storage solutions like NetApp, Dell EMC, Pure Storage, or HPE 3PAR. Backup & Disaster Recovery (7+ years): Expertise in Veeam, Commvault, or Rubrik and hospital-specific disaster recovery planning for HIPAA compliance. Data Center Operations (8+ years): Managing hospital data center environments, including power, cooling, failover, and remote access. Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity (6+ years): Designing failover strategies, geo-redundancy, and high-availability (HA) solutions. Hybrid Cloud & Multi-Cloud Strategies (5+ years): Implementing cloud backup, failover, and disaster recovery solutions for healthcare IT. Microsoft 365 & Exchange Administration (6+ years): Managing Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint, Teams, and OneDrive in a hospital setting. Active Directory & Identity Management (7+ years): Managing Azure AD, AD DS, ADFS, and Single Sign-On (SSO) solutions for hospital environments. Enterprise Network Infrastructure (6+ years): Understanding of network architectures, LAN/WAN, VLANs, SD-WAN, firewalls, and VPNs in hospital IT. Enterprise Endpoint Management (5+ years): Supporting Windows, macOS, and mobile device management (MDM) via Intune, SCCM, or JAMF. Experience with containerization technologies such as Docker or Kubernetes. Experience with hybrid cloud architecture and cloud migration strategies. Familiarity with DevOps methodologies and CI/CD pipelines. Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Experience with Terraform, Ansible, or AWS CloudFormation for automating infrastructure provisioning. Experience working with Microsoft Office 365 and enterprise collaboration platforms. Healthcare/Hospital industry experience.
