Purpose

The Thomas Jefferson Center for the Study of Core Texts and Ideas invites applications for a post-doctoral teaching fellowship for a term of one academic year from August 16, 2025 to August 15, 2026, possibly renewable for a second year.

This position is a full-time appointment that provides a competitive stipend and benefits. Applicants must complete or have completed their Ph.D. degree within the past three (3) years before the starting date.

Please submit a cover letter explaining your interest in teaching the great books in a multi-disciplinary setting and setting forth research aims and plans, a current C.V., a research paper or other suitable evidence of scholarship, evidence of excellence in undergraduate teaching, and a list of three references (one of which should be from a previous supervisor).

Responsibilities

  • Teach one undergraduate course per semester on classic writings on American Democracy including Tocqueville, the Founders, and African-American political thinkers or major works in the history of political philosophy.
  • Conduct scholarly research.
  • Other related functions as assigned

Required Qualifications

Must have a Ph.D., conferred no more than 3 years before the start date, and may not hold a tenure track position elsewhere.

Salary Range

$60,000

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
