The Ohio State University (OSU) was established in 1870 as the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College under the Morrill Act of 1862. Instruction began in 1873 on a farm near Columbus, Ohio. In 1878, reflecting its broadened academic scope, the institution was renamed The Ohio State University. ​
