PhD position

At the Grieg Academy – Department of Music there is a vacancy for two PhD positions (100 %) in artistic research within music performance and creative music practices. The appointment is for a fixed-term period of four years with a desired start date of 01. 09.2024.

About the project/work tasks:

The PhD education is intended to qualify for artistic research of an international standard and for other work in society where great demands are made for artistic insight and competence in accordance with good academic practice and ethical standards. The project must fall under the subject area of music performance and creative music practice. At the Grieg Academy this subject area covers a variety of musical genres. The Department offers study programmes with BA and MA with study courses including classical, jazz, traditional music and composition.

The project should have a clear focus on music performance and aim to bring new insight into and a deeper understanding of performative processes. The project needs to have a clear foundation in the competence area of the profiles of the Grieg Academy’s artistic research environment. For the strategic developments in the department, we are particularly interested in projects that can contribute to explore various and innovative methods and formats for documentation of artistic/musical reflection in music performance.

Applications will be assessed based on the criteria outlined in the program description for the PhD program, the candidate’s artistic practice, and the research expertise at the department. Applicants are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the profile of the PhD program in artistic research at the faculty when designing their project, and to incorporate this when creating a project description. Further information about the PhD program at KMD here.

Project Description: 

The project description should place the project in a subject/research field, and present the theme, problems and research questions, context, method, and plan for dissemination of results. The project description should present the project’s placement and relevance to the academic environment at the department, explaining any specific needs for academic and material resources, as well as addressing any legal and ethical considerations. Applicants must also indicate potential collaborating institutions and partners. We also request a separate progress plan for the various parts of the artistic research. Refer to Section 2.1 of the Program Description and our guide for writing a project description for more information about what the application should typically include.

The following conditions apply to the position: 

A PhD position shall lead to the completion of a doctoral degree and contribute to qualifying the candidate for relevant careers in higher education and research institutions, as well as in other sectors of the workforce where research expertise is required.

The total employment period is 4 years. At least three years will be dedicated to the doctoral research work. The remaining time will be allocated to other career-promoting activities aimed at qualifying the candidate for relevant careers requiring research expertise.

About the research training:  

As a PhD candidate, you must participate in an approved educational programme for a PhD degree within a period of 3 years. It is a condition that you satisfy the enrolment requirements for the PhD programme at the University of Bergen. A final plan for the implementation of the research training must be approved by the faculty within three months after you have started work in the position.

The candidate is required to complete the mandatory joint training component in the National Research School in Artistic Research.

At the Grieg Academy, the PhD research fellows can also join the Grieg Research School of Interdisciplinary Music Studies, a research school that gathers research fellows from a broad landscape of music fields and disciplines.

There is a residency requirement for PhD candidates employed at the faculty.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • Applicants must hold a bachelor’s and master’s degree in music performance for a total of at least 5 years. The degree must be completed before the application deadline. Equivalent competence may exceptionally be assessed in accordance with the Norwegian Qualifications Framework, level 7.
  • Applicants must have experience in artistic practice and production at a high level.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and have the ability to cooperate with others.
  • Applicants must have good written and verbal English skills.

Personal and interpersonal qualities will be emphasized, with consideration given to ambitions and potential.

  • Documentation of formal qualifications. This includes diplomas and transcripts of grades for completed bachelor’s degree and master’s degree s, as well as certified translations if the language is other than Nordic or English.
  • In addition:
    • For education from the Nordic countries/EU/EEA, a Diploma Supplement must be included.
    • For education outside the Nordic countries, automatic recognition in accordance with HK-dir must be included. Refer to Education from outside of Norway| HK-dir for more information on the general recognition of higher education obtained abroad.
    • For education not included in the list, recognition from HK-dir is required.
  • Project description of up to 3000 words.
  • Progress plan.
  • Budget (download template here).
  • Documentation of relevant artistic practice in the form of audio and/or video recordings.
  • A brief statement outlining the applicant’s research interests and motivation for applying for the position.
  • CV
  • Names and contact information for two references. One of these should be the main supervisor of the master’s thesis.
