The Faculty of Law is looking for a full-time doctoral scholarship holder in the field of public international law/international human rights law
Position
- You work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis in the context of the FWO project “Doing Business with Armed Groups: In search of shared responsibility and accountability for international crimes”, within the research group Law & Development. The wide-ranging subject of your PhD thesis is ‘Shared responsibility and accountability of armed groups and businesses for international crimes’ and can be approached from the perspective of public international law / international human rights law / international humanitarian law / comparative law.
- You publish scientific articles related to the research project.
- You carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for the research groups.
Profile
- You hold a Master degree in law or you will have obtained it by the time you start work.
- You submit a writing sample (max. 5 pages) relevant to the research you will be developing, paying attention to the international dimension of the subject. This writing sample should be your own original work – any use of AI or collaboration with another person should be declared and explained.
The prior conditions are conditions of admissibility.
- You can demonstrate excellent study results in the area of public international law/international human rights law. You substantiate this with a detailed overview of your study results (see ‘Want to apply?’).
- Your command of English is adequate; this means that English is either your mother tongue or that you are able to express yourself fluently and spontaneously in English on complex (academic) subjects both orally and in writing.
- Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
- Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
- You are able to plan and organise your own work well (taking priorities into account).
- You are self-reliant and able to plan and organise your own work well (taking priorities into account).
- You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
- You are motivated to work actively on your further professional development.
- You have a particular interest in scientific research in the field of ‘Shared responsibility and accountability of armed groups and businesses for international crimes’, particularly from the perspective of accountability in international law (e.g. for reparations).
What we offer
- We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed once for another two-year period.
- The planned start date is 1 May 2025 or as soon as possible after that date.
- Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for contract research staff (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
- You will receive ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
- You will do most of your work at the City Campus in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
