Being a doctoral student means being accepted to a postgraduate level education (postgraduate education) where you have an individual study plan. A PhD student engages in a research project under supervision, supplemented by courses and other learning activities. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time postgraduate education is required.
The Institute for Environmental Medicine
The Institute for Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institute within the broadly defined field of environmental medicine. IMM also acts as a scientific advisor to authorities in the field of environmental medicine, and IMM researchers participate in national and international expert groups that make risk assessments or develop guidelines.
The Unit for Intervention and Implementation Research in Occupational Health
The doctoral student will work at the Unit for intervention and implementation research in occupational health . The unit is interdisciplinary and consists of approximately 15 employees who research measures to promote health and prevent ill-health in the workplace and in private life. There are great benefits to investing in work environment and health-related efforts for both the individual, the employer, and society, and it is crucial that research results are quickly put to use and benefit. We therefore also carry out implementation research where we investigate the best ways to introduce new knowledge into different types of operations.
The doctoral project and the doctoral student’s tasks
In this doctoral project, you will have the opportunity to contribute to research on social problems linked to mental health and the work environment. In your role as a doctoral student, you will investigate work environment factors linked to health and return to work after sick leave due to mental illness. The focus is on personal assistants, an important and often understudied professional group within Swedish welfare. In your role, you will participate in various phases of a research project, including planning, collecting and analyzing data and reporting. You will also communicate research results to other researchers and cooperating actors. In the project, both quantitative and qualitative methods will be used to investigate the work and health of personal assistants.

Eligibility requirements for education at postgraduate level
To participate in the selection for a doctoral place, you must prove both the basic (A) and the special (B) eligibility requirements before the application period closes.

A) Basic eligibility requirements
You meet the basic eligibility requirement for postgraduate education if you:
- have completed a degree at advanced level (master’s or master’s degree), or
- have completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or
- have otherwise acquired substantially equivalent knowledge.*

B) Special eligibility requirements
You meet the special eligibility requirement for postgraduate education if you:
– Certifies knowledge of English (equivalent to English B/English 6 at high school with a passing grade).

Checking of documents Karolinska Institutet checks the documents to detect forgeries. Karolinska Institutet reserves the right to revoke admission decisions if falsifications or inaccuracies are detected. Submitting false documents is a crime against Swedish law and is considered grounds for legal action.
Skills and personal characteristics
We are looking for an ambitious and research-motivated person with a relevant background, for example a master’s or master’s degree in occupational science, public health science, psychology, social work, occupational therapy, health science, gender science, sociology, or equivalent. We are looking for a committed candidate with good analytical skills, collaborative skills and high accuracy. Previous experience or knowledge of qualitative analysis (of interview material) and quantitative methods (survey data) is advantageous. Knowledge or experience of any of the following is also meritorious: occupational health, work environment, sick leave, rehabilitation or gender theory. The candidate needs to have excellent skills in speaking, reading and writing in English and Swedish, the latter as Swedish data is collected and analysed. Emphasis will be placed on personal skills in the selection process.
Terms
The doctoral position means employment as a doctoral student for a maximum of 4 years full-time.
