The work environment is stimulating and creative. The workplace is shared with another research group with whom we have a close collaboration. Our research group studies in various ways health-related quality of life, symptoms, weight development and psychological aspects in patients who undergo surgery for esophageal or gastric cancer. You can read more about us on our website Surgical Care Science.

The doctoral project and the doctoral student’s tasks

As a doctoral student in this project, you will be part of the Graduate School of Health Sciences (FIH) .

The overall aim of the doctoral project is to improve patients’ recovery through new strategies for follow-up, digital support and dietary adaptation after surgery for esophageal and gastric cancer. The doctoral project consists of four sub-studies where the specific objectives are to investigate: 1) Whether symptom burden after surgery can predict survival in a national cohort study; 2) Quality of life and symptoms shortly after surgery in a randomized controlled trial, www.recapp.se ; 3) The relationship between blood sugar levels and dumping symptoms and how blood sugar measurement and dietary advice affect the severity of symptoms in a pilot study; and 4) What information and support relatives need to better contribute to patients’ recovery in a national cohort study. The project is described on the Graduate School of Health Sciences website: http://bit.ly/3CRSG6g

The doctoral project includes collaboration with patients who have undergone surgery for esophageal or gastric cancer through our research partner group . Furthermore, the doctoral student will have a central role in the planned clinical trial in substudy 2.

The doctoral student will gain knowledge in different study designs in clinical research. As a doctoral student, you work in a team where everyone works towards the same goal and helps each other. The doctoral student may work with or take part in work that concerns all parts of a research project, i.e. planning, ethics application, data collection, data processing and analysis as well as scientific writing and presentation of results at conferences.
