Would you like to contribute to addressing the challenging policy issues facing the fisheries sector in order to achieve sustainable and future-proof fishing practices? Then the role of Economic Researcher in Fisheries is perfect for you!

As an Economic Researcher in Fisheries, you will work as a researcher in changing, interdisciplinary project teams. Together with the team, you will address knowledge questions regarding fisheries economics and the economics of exploiting natural aquatic resources. One example of a project you will work on as part of a team is conducting various impact analyses, determining the socio-economic consequences of policies on Dutch fisheries. You will frequently collaborate with other departments of Wageningen University & Research, such as Wageningen Marine Research. You will be a sparring partner for your colleagues and able to translate their quantitative research questions into clear project proposals. You will present research results and provide independent advice on the course to follow. As a project leader, you will represent the organization externally, including acquiring new projects.

You will work in the “Performance & Impact Agrosectors” expertise group, one of the twelve groups within Wageningen Social & Economic Research. This group consists of about 35 enthusiastic professionals who are committed to a more sustainable world, using their knowledge of the agriculture and fisheries sectors. We conduct economic sector studies and provide independent advice based on scientific insights. Our projects are diverse and include monitoring and scenario studies, measuring the sustainability performance of sectors and businesses, and policy evaluations and explorations. Through our studies, we help address the current challenges faced by the fisheries sector, such as sustainability, fleet restructuring, and innovation capacity.

Your qualities

  • A completed MSc in an economic field or quantitative marine science, preferably supplemented with a PhD in a relevant field.
  • Clear affinity with the fisheries sector in Western Europe.
  • Knowledge of European research projects.
  • 5+ years of work experience, preferably in applied research.
  • Experience with quantitative research methods.
  • Sensitivity to complex political-administrative relationships.
  • Experience as a project leader.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both in Dutch and English. These will be used in presentations and scientific publications.
