Job related information
Start date: June 1, 2025
Contract duration: 1 year, renewable once for three years.
Activity rate: 100%
Workplace: Lausanne-Dorigny
Your activities
According to Directive 1.31 of the University of Lausanne, the activity rate of an FNS doctoral student is dedicated 85% to the completion of a doctoral thesis and 15% to teaching support and research activities in the section to which they are attached.
As part of their thesis, the doctoral student will be in charge of specific research on “mannerism and baroque analyzed and appropriated by 20th century artists”. The main aim of the thesis will be to analyze the works, practices and discourses of 20th century artists who, from expressionism to postmodernism, have seized upon the categories of “mannerism” and “baroque” to situate their work and its place in the history of art. Is it possible to envisage a coherence in these different uses, likely to indicate turning points in the ways of appropriating the past of art? In constant interaction with the writings and teaching of art historians, often with the aim of contradicting or correcting them, artists from expressionism to the various currents of postmodernism, including minimalism and post-minimalism, have found sometimes in mannerism and sometimes in the baroque self-reflexive categories that have allowed them to appropriate the gestures, technologies and discourses of art historians. It will therefore be a question of conducting research in three fields: the construction of art history discourses, the interpretation and analysis of certain mannerist or baroque artists during the 20th century, and finally the appropriations of these two objects by contemporary artists. Depending on the needs of the research, international mobility, particularly for research in archives, is possible.
