About PhD Program,
Linguistic anthropology examines the relationship between language, culture, and society. Through ethnographic methods and with an eye toward semiotic analysis, linguistic anthropologists at NYU explore how language and other communicative forms and practices partake in social life, politics, economics, cultural formations, and historical processes. Situating the study of language in its sociohistorical context enables us to elucidate systems of exchange, hierarchy, authority, contestation, and change. Topics of particular interest include linguistic nationalism, multilingualism, racializing discourse, literacy and education, multimodal interaction, technologically-enhanced communication, and post-/colonial language policy and law. NYU faculty and students are part of the New York Linguistic Anthropology Working Group (NYLAWG), which facilitates intellectual exchanges about anthropological perspectives on language.
