Job description
As department head Controlling Services you are ultimately responsible for the planning and execution of the department’s activities. You ensure that the directors of the other services (such as HR, IT, M&C) are optimally supported and relieved in the area of financial control. In addition, you advise and support the Finance Director in realizing strategic objectives and other complex financial issues.
Within the Controlling Services department, you will work with a team of nine colleagues (7.4 FTE) and you will be the point of contact for the Finance Director. You will act as a sparring partner for those responsible for various business processes within and outside the university and translate complex financial issues into practical and strategic advice. Together with your team, you will work on drawing up and implementing multi-year financial policy that aligns with the ambitions and strategy of Erasmus University. With your insight and involvement, you will be able to improve financial processes and stimulate cooperation within and outside the department.
Your core tasks in brief:
- Leading a team of controllers and assistant controllers;
- Responsible for the P&C cycle, including the preparation of multi-year budgets, interim progress reports and analyses;
- Contribute to the annual accounts by providing financial data and reports;
- Advising on facilities and regulations in the P&C field in collaboration with the controllers;
- Business control advice;
- Identifying areas for improvement and making improvement proposals with the team;
- Further professionalization of the control function at EUR;
- Participate in projects and act as a sparring partner for administrative organization and service provision;
- Drawing up annual plans for the Controlling Services department.
- Helping the organization become more data-driven;
- Supporting the implementation of a new business management system;
- Carrying out HRM tasks such as development interviews and recruiting and selecting personnel;
- Member of the MT-Finance.
Job requirements
- A completed university degree in Business Economics, Control, Accountancy, or an academic degree in a comparable field;
- Demonstrable work experience in a similar position; experience in higher education is an advantage;
- Experience as a business partner for directors and management;
- A strongly developed organizational awareness, curious, analytical, the ability to take responsibility and tackle matters proactively;
- Excellent oral and written command of the Dutch language (CEFR level C1).

Working conditions
We offer you an internationally oriented and varied job in an enthusiastic team, with excellent employment conditions in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU).
The salary depends on your knowledge and experience and amounts to between € 6,224 and € 7,575 gross per month for a full-time position (38 hours). Scale 13, in accordance with the CAO-NU. Your location is Campus Woudestein – Rotterdam, at Finance (FIN). The position has a size of 0.8 FTE – 1 FTE. The contract is entered into for a period of 1 year and can be converted into a permanent employment contract if suitability is proven and if (financial and/or organizational) circumstances remain the same.

The services provided by Finance Services are organised in four departments: Financial Transaction Office (FTO), Monitoring & Reporting (M&R), Project and Programme Control (PPC) and Controlling Services (CS).
In total, 50 employees work within the Finance Department, 9 of whom work in the Controlling Services department. The culture within the department is informal. The professionals of Controlling Services meet on location at least once a week to share knowledge and exchange experiences.
