A Junior Specialist is needed for assistance in lung tissue processing and preparation in an in-vivo models of various perinatology sheep models conducted through the Surgical Research Facility. Primary research work will be conducted at the Center for Health and Technology under the oversight of PIs Dr. Michelle Lim, Dr. Kent Pinkerton and Dr. Satyan Lakshminrusimha. Responsibilities include assistance in maintenance of laboratory supply needs, collection of data following tissue processing, and primary lung (adult and fetal lung tissue) tissue processing, sectioning, embedment and histological assessment. Basic laboratory and background in an animal research work with prior tissue work is preferred along with strong communication skills and adherence to laboratory protocols.
Research (85%):
• This position will require the ability to organize, plan, and execute clinical, collaborative, and benchtop research experiments as well as the ability to generate and analyze high quality data for publication purposes.
• Responsibilities
• The successful candidate will assist in the collection and processing of biological specimens (i.e., blood, tissue, etc.) and will be responsible for maintaining databases and archives of collected samples).
• Additional job responsibilities include compiling and summarizing data in spreadsheets, assisting with scientific manuscript preparation, maintaining research equipment, ordering
supplies, maintaining clean and safe laboratory environments, and ensuring compliance with all health and safety guidelines and protocols.
Professional Competence (5%):
• Attend and actively participate in laboratory meetings including presentation of data.
• Review scholarly literature and identify technical support to learn new techniques and methods required for ongoing or future projects.
• Participation in appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and other educational and research organizations.
University and Public Service (10%):
• Incumbent may occasionally liaise with external organizations in the field of intervention, health equity, and/or educational policies.
• Along with the PI, the candidate will follow lab safety compliance and general lab upkeep (ordering, monitoring equipment, scheduling, etc.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Excellent organizational skills
• Experience working in a basic lab skills that include: practice of sterile techniques, pipettes, weigh, sterilize, filtrate
• Preferred skills and experience in an animal research lab is ideal and include experience in fixation, embedding, staining and sectioning tissue work as well as histology techniques related to embedding and staining processes.
• Biochemistry techniques is welcomed including experience in immune and biochemical assays
• Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
• Strong desire to learn and acquire new skills
