About the position

Do you have a master’s degree in economics or financial economics with very good results and the motivation to delve into the subject through independent research? Then you could be the one we’re looking for! 

The Department of Economics (ISØ) is looking for a committed, curious and ambitious person who wants to pursue a PhD in economics. The position is for three years.

We conduct research of high international quality within a wide range of subject areas. The department’s main profile is in applied microeconomics, such as public economics, political economy and behavioral economics. Other research areas are environmental and resource economics, development economics, international economics, macro and financial economics. We are looking for candidates who want to work on projects within one of the department’s research areas.

We currently have 23 academic staff, 700 students and three administrative staff. You will become part of an active and inclusive research community at the department, and through the doctoral program you will also get to know research fellows from other departments at the Faculty of Economics. 

As a research fellow with us, you will work towards achieving your doctoral degree, while at the same time gaining valuable experience that qualifies you for a further career in higher education and research, in and outside of academia.

Your immediate supervisor will be the head of department.

Work tasks

The main goal of the fellowship position is competence building and research training, and you will be admitted to  the faculty’s doctoral program .  

As a scholarship holder, you will: 

  • conduct high-quality research  
  • carry out a training component that contains academic and methodological training at doctoral level
  • present own research work at national and international scientific conferences

ISØ aims to produce research at a high international level. As part of this, contact with international educational institutions is important. It is therefore an advantage that you spend one or two semesters at a foreign educational institution during your employment period. We help to facilitate this.

Qualification requirements

To be qualified for this position, you must have: 

  • completed or be in the process of completing a master’s degree of 120 credits or equivalent, in economics or financial economics
  • a strong academic background from your previous studies, and have an average grade from your master’s degree, or equivalent education, that is equal to B or better compared to NTNU’s grading scale . If you do not have letter grades from your previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation
  • a subject combination that demonstrates solid methodological knowledge within econometrics 
  • good oral and written communication skills in English 

Master’s students can apply, but the master’s degree must be obtained and documented before the start of the position.

As a result of the new Higher Education Act and associated regulations of 01.08.2024, NTNU has chosen to use the employment conditions in the old  regulations of 31 January 2006 no. 102 on employment conditions for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, research assistant, research assistant and specialist candidate during a transitional period (for decisions on appointments in recruitment positions before 1 August 2025).

Salary and conditions

In the position of fellow code 1017, your gross salary will be NOK 536,200 per year depending on qualifications and seniority. A 2% statutory contribution to the Norwegian State Pension Fund and NOK 400 per year in funds for training and development measures will be deducted from your salary.

The employment period is 3 years. 

For employment as a research fellow, it is a prerequisite that you are admitted to the PhD program in economics and management within three months of commencement, and that you participate in an organized doctoral study program within the employment period.

As an employee at NTNU, it is important that you stay up to date on academic and organizational changes and adapt to them.

For necessary interaction academically and socially, it is a prerequisite that you are physically present and available to the institution on a daily basis.

The appointment will be carried out in accordance with the principles of  the Government Employees Act , and  legislation regulating the export of knowledge, technology and services . Candidates who, after assessment of the application and attachments, are deemed to conflict with the criteria in the latter act, will not be able to be employed.

About the application

  • transcripts and diplomas for bachelor’s and master’s degrees 
  • CV
  • certificates
  • project outline containing proposals for an overall description of research questions, theoretical perspectives, methodological design for the project and progress plan (max 1-2 pages) 
  • short motivation letter (400 words/1 page)
  • any publications and other scientific works (not the master’s thesis) that you would like to be taken into account. In the case of joint work, you must attach a short account of your participation
  • names and contact information of three relevant references

If all or part of your education was taken abroad, we ask you to also attach documentation of the scope and quality of your entire education, both bachelor’s and master’s education, in addition to any other higher education. If your institution offers a “diploma supplement”, please attach this. A description of other documentation that is required can be found  here . If you have a statement from  HK-dir , it is a good idea if you attach it as well.
