The Department of Marine Technology at NTNU has a vacancy for a full-time position as a PhD Candidate. The goal is to complete a doctoral education while working on a collaborative research project FUSE together with SINTEF Ocean and Norwegian industrial partners. The vision is to rapidly reduce emissions from the global fleet by unlocking the full potential of operational data through fusing AI and ship hydrodynamics.

Your immediate leader will be the Head of Department.
Duties of the position
A PhD position has two primary goals. For one, you will learn how to do scientific research of high international standards, which shall lead to the award of a PhD degree. Second, you will produce results for the project FUSE (Fusing AI and Ship Hydrodynamics for Next-Gen Voyage Optimization).
- Investigating the ship performance, correlations, and uncertainties using complex in-service data from modern ships.
- Improving and/or further developing ship performance models by combining data driven framework with first-principle physics (i.e., conventional methods for prediction of required propulsion power and motions in waves).
- Using the developed ship performance models for route optimization, operator guidance, and similar applications.
- Taking part in academic discussions in the international academic community.
The candidate is expected to disseminate scientific findings via journal publications and international conferences, workshops, or similar events. As a PhD candidate, it is a requirement that you complete academic training consisting of coursework corresponding to a minimum of 30 ECTS.
Required selection criteria
- You must have a professionally relevant background in marine technology, naval architecture, computer science, physics or applied mathematics.
- Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at master’s level
- You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master’s degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU’s grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
- You must have good written and oral English language skills.
- Master’s students can apply, but the master’s degree must be obtained and documented by before starting the position.

If you cannot document skills in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish at level A2 upon employment, you must complete Norwegian courses corresponding to at least 15 credits before the end of the employment period. NTNU will facilitate this.
The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations for the Universities and Colleges Act (university and colleges regulations) and Regulations for the degrees philosophiae doctor (ph.d.) and philosophiae doctor (ph.d.) in artistic development work at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) for general criteria for the position.
Preferred selection criteria
- Knowledge/experience with shipping and ship operations.
- Knowledge of ship hydrodynamics.
- Knowledge of and hands-on experience with machine learning and/or statistical data analysis.
- Strong programming skills in Python (Python Data Stack, PyTorch, etc.).
- Skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language.

Salary and conditions
In the position of PhD Candidate, code 1017, your gross salary will normally be NOK 536 200,- per annum depending on qualifications and seniority. A 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund is deducted from the salary.
The employment period is 3 years. If learning Norwegian (level A2 corresponding to at least 15 credits) is to be completed before the end of the employment period, the employment period can be extended by 10 weeks after completed and documented the Norwegian course.
