Being a doctoral student means being admitted to a postgraduate education (doctoral training) where one follows an individual study plan. A doctoral student engages in a research project under supervision, supplemented by courses and other learning activities. A doctoral degree requires the equivalent of four years of full-time postgraduate education.

Research group

The doctoral student will be part of Professor Marie Löf’s research group IMPACT at the Department of Medicine, Huddinge The IMPACT research group – Marie Löf | Karolinska Institutet , which consists of 30 people and includes both senior and junior researchers, postdoctoral fellows and doctoral students. The research group has more than ten years of experience in developing digital lifestyle interventions (diet and physical activity) for primary and secondary prevention of obesity and lifestyle-related diseases in children and adults that can be delivered by healthcare. The group also leads several Swedish data collections in large international studies and the research environment continuously hosts several international guest researchers on shorter and longer stays. Professor Löf is also coordinator of the newly started multidisciplinary research center Centre for Nutrition where one of the research tracks is digital health.

The doctoral project and the doctoral student’s tasks

The doctoral student will work on the project “AI-generated lifestyle intervention for secondary prevention of acute coronary syndrome with a special focus on equitable care”. The project aims to investigate whether so-called generative artificial intelligence (Generative AI, GenAI) can improve lifestyle programs for secondary prevention of ACS in terms of scalability and access for foreign-born people. The project develops new and innovative digital technology based on generative AI and has great potential to contribute to better and more inclusive digital lifestyle interventions in self-care and secondary prevention of cardiovascular diseases. The doctoral student will have a co-supervisor from Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia and there will be opportunities for a short stay there within the framework of the project. As a doctoral student in the Graduate School of Health Sciences, the person also participates in courses and activities organized by the graduate school.

Eligibility requirements for doctoral education

To participate in the selection for a doctoral position, you must prove both the basic (A) and the specific (B) eligibility requirements before the application period closes.

A) Basic eligibility requirements

You meet the basic eligibility requirements for doctoral education if you:

  1. have completed an advanced level degree (Master’s or Doctoral degree), or
  2. have completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are at advanced level,  or
  3. has otherwise acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.*

B) Special eligibility requirements

You meet the specific eligibility requirements for doctoral education if you:

– Certifies knowledge of English (equivalent to English B/English 6 at high school with a passing grade).

Document verification Karolinska Institutet checks documents to detect forgeries. Karolinska Institutet reserves the right to revoke admission decisions if forgeries or irregularities are detected. Submission of false documents is a violation of Swedish law and is considered grounds for legal action.

Skills and personal qualities

We are looking for a person with a strong interest in digital technology and lifestyle-related diseases, and especially how we can use digital solutions and tools to improve secondary prevention and opportunities for equitable care. This position requires a background in nutrition, physiotherapy, nursing, medicine, public health or another relevant field. Previous experience in research, preferably documented with publications and experience in data collection, is an advantage. Previous experience in intervention development, especially digital interventions, is also an advantage. We would like the person to have previous experience in using AI tools (e.g. ChatGPT). Previous experience of working in research or healthcare linked to the health of vulnerable groups is also an advantage. The person must be meticulous and structured, and be able to work independently and together in a group. We place great emphasis on the ability to collaborate, flexibility and personal suitability. Fluency in Swedish, both spoken and written, is a requirement as the position involves data collection and intervention development in Swedish. Good knowledge of English, both spoken and written, is required.

Terms

The doctoral position involves employment as a doctoral student for a maximum of 4 years full-time.

– Other documented knowledge/experience that may be of importance to the current doctoral education
