About the project

If you are a UK-domiciled student of Black or Mixed-Black heritage, come pursue a fully funded doctorate in the School of Geography and Environmental Sciences at the University of Southampton with a Black Futures Scholarship.

The School of Geography and Environmental Sciences is looking for Black Futures Scholars. These fully funded studentships support student-led research proposals, typically co-designed or co-developed with academic staff in the School.

We are looking for eligible applicants interested in research projects that use quantitative and/or qualitative methods, explore connections between disciplines, and align topics towards their own questions and curiosity. Potential topics in the School include:

  • Inside the Three Chains: a social and environmental history of marginal coastal land in the Caribbean archipelago, and its implications for disaster risk and resilience
  • Creative commons and craft communities: Exploring the developments and dynamics of sustainable creative enterprises
  • Colonial cities, natural hazards, and cultures of resilience
  • Barriers to access to outdoor recreation and implications for mental health.

We encourage interested applicants to get in touch regarding these and other topics in Physical or Human Geography and Environmental Science, to begin the process of collaboratively building a Black Futures studentship proposal.
