Are you interested in pursuing a PhD in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) at the University of Edinburgh? We are currently looking to recruit a talented, hardworking, and passionate PhD student to study the dispersive behaviour of different sterilant formulations during the decontamination of materials with complex geometries and the disinfection of large spaces.

The dispersive behaviour of sterilants such as ethylene oxide, vapourised hydrogen peroxide and ozone is a crucial determinant of microbial inactivation efficacy during the decontamination of ordinary surfaces, medical equipment, and indoor environments. This project will focus on the development and CFD-based models that will enable better designs of disinfection equipment and layouts of indoor spaces. The project will also involve some experimentation, which will be essential for validating CFD simulations. You should have a strong interest or some research experience in multiphase flow modelling, numerical methods, high-performance computing, data processing, and programming (e.g., via user-defined functions in relevant CFD Software).

As a PhD student, you will be exposed to diverse activities (local and international) to support your professional development. You will have the opportunity to present your findings at conferences, workshops, and seminars. You will also collaborate with our industry partners to facilitate the real-world applicability of your findings.

This project will be supervised by Dr Emmanuel Epelle and Dr Dimitrios Gerogiorgis. Please note that the position may be closed earlier if a suitable candidate is found.

We look forward to hearing from you if this position interests you.

Funding

For UK and International students, Tuition Fees and a stipend of £20,716 (tax-free) per annum for up to 3.5 years.
