Overview
Newcastle University offers NINE DTP studentships in the following areas:
· Environmental Planning (Planning, Environment, Food and Rural Development)
· Law
· Linguistics (Education, Communication and Language Sciences)
· Linguistics (English Language, Literature and Linguistics)
· Management, Business and Economics
· Politics and International Relations
· Sociology, Social Policy and Social Work
· Health, Well-being and Society (a thematic Pathway across the Population Health Sciences Institute, Geography, Sociology, Architecture, Planning and Landscape and the Centre for Rural Economy.
· Children, Youth and Families (a thematic pathway across Geography, Sociology, Politics, Law, Education, and the Human Nutrition Research Centre).
· Conflict, Security and Justice (a thematic pathway across Geography, Politics and Law).
· Environment, Climate and Sustainability (a thematic pathway across Environmental Planning, Human Geography, Politics, Law, Language Based Area Studies, Global Urban Research Unit and Centre for Rural Economy).
Number Of Awards
Up to 50 PhD studentships offered across the universities of Newcastle, Durham, Northumbria, Queen’s University Belfast, Teesside, Sunderland and Ulster.
Start Date
1 October 2025
Award Duration
· 3.5 years (PhD) for students with a strong grounding in the core conceptual, general research and subject/field knowledge skills required for their PhD.
· 4 years for students requiring training in the core research skills needed for the PhD. Students complete the PG Certificate in Research Training.
· 4.5 years comprising a Research Masters in the relevant discipline, followed by a PhD.
· 5.5 Year comprising a research training Masters and a language- training Masters (Language-based Area Studies only).
Awards are offered on a full-time or part-time basis.

Eligibility Criteria
· All UK and international applicants with a research proposal falling within the subject areas above, who meet the ESRC’s eligibility criteria; and
· Who meet the entry requirements of the relevant Masters and/or PhD programme(s); and
· Who have secured the support of a supervisory team with expertise in their subject area.

Register and apply through the University’s Apply to Newcastle Portal.
Once registered select ‘Create a Postgraduate Application’.
Use ‘Course Search’ to identify your programme of study:
- Search for the Course Title using the programme code if known (for example ‘8214F’). Alternatively, search by using a keyword/course name or ‘Research Area’.
- The Research Area, (for example ‘Geography’)
- Select the programme of study, (for example, ‘PhD School of Geography, Politics and Sociology (full time) – Geography’)
Provide the following information in the ‘Further Questions’ section:
- A Personal Statement – upload a document or write a statement directly in to the application form.
- The studentship code ESR25 in the ‘Studentship/Partnership Reference’ field.
- An outline of your Research Proposal – select either ‘Write Proposal’ or ‘Upload document’.
In addition, upload the following supporting documentation:
- Degree transcripts and certificates and, if English is not your first language, a copy of your English language qualification if already completed.
Your application does not guarantee consideration for an award. Subject Pathways will select their strongest applicants for nomination to the final stage of the Studentship Competition.
