Your Job:
- Work on a range of machine learning and/or causal inference methods to study the impact of volcanic and solar forcings on stratosphere-troposphere coupling, where explainability, interpretability, and reliability are as important as high accuracy
- Analyse strategically designed chemistry-climate model simulations and paleo-climate data records to advance our understanding of the underlying theory of solar and volcanic impacts on surface climate
- Work with experts at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) to run your algorithms/tools on large, distributed computer systems
- Write reports and journal publications, regularly participate in SOLVE project meetings together with our Helmholtz partners (GEOMAR, AWI, GFZ and KIT), and attend international conferences to present your work
Your Profile:
- PhD in atmospheric sciences, meteorology, or computer sciences (or a related field)
- Ideally bring experience in devising machine learning models, causal inference methods, and other AI tools
- Scientific track record with publications at internationally renowned venues
- Solid mathematical background, distinct analytical and numerical skills
- Solid programming skills (e.g. Python)
- Excellent ability to cooperate at the boundary of natural sciences and data science, and to work as part of a team, interdisciplinary and cross-topical thinking
- Very good communication skills
- Very good English, both spoken and written. German language skills are not necessary but a plus
- High motivation and work ethics
