PhD must have been received within the past three years. This is a temporary training position that can be renewed annually, for a maximum of five years based upon performance review, progress towards research goals, and continuation of funding.

 

Purpose

To work within the Laboratory of Dr. Zunlong Ke at the Department of Molecular Biosciences, the University of Texas at Austin. This Postdoctoral Fellow position is funded by Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT). The aim for this position is to investigate cancer-causing viruses and their interactions with hosts using a spectrum of structural biology techniques. We will take advantage of the state-of-the-art cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET), cryo-correlative microscopy, cryo-FIB milling, coupled with functional assays to dissect the molecular mechanisms of cancer-causing viruses.

 

Responsibilities

  • To undertake research aimed at applying cryo-electron microscopy, cryo-electron tomography, cryo-correlative microscopy, and cryo-FIB milling to study molecular architecture of cancer-causing viruses and their interactions with hosts.
  • To identify, develop, and apply a broad range of techniques to pursue the research objective.
  • To draft scientific papers and contribute to the overall preparation of research for publication and grant application.
  • To present scientific progress within the group and at external conferences.
  • To assist in the training of PhD students and to contribute to laboratory-wide discussions on developments within the field.
  • To contribute to the Department’s and University’s mission in the public engagement of science, and the translation of research findings into improvements in human health.

 

Required Qualifications

PhD in molecular biology, biochemistry or closely related field. PhD must have been received within the past 3 years. A strong background and track-record in molecular biology, structural biology, and infectious diseases. Capacity to plan your own work and objectives on a 12-month basis and manage your experimental work within the project along with your supervisor. Ability to identify, develop, and apply the relevant techniques to achieve the goals of the projects. Basic knowledge in coding language, including but not limited to, basics of Linux, MATLAB, Python. Ability to carry out both wet-lab work for sample preparation and dry-lab work for image analysis. Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary environment.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Expertise in virology and structural biology. Expertise in cryo-EM, cryo-ET, and cryo-FIB milling technologies. Expertise in computer language, including but not limited to, bash scripting, MATLAB, Python, R, and machine learning.

 

Salary Range

$58,744 + depending on qualifications

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
