Do you want to contribute to improving people’s health?

Do you want to contribute to improving the health and quality of life of cancer survivors? Do you want to be involved in analyzing data from a recently completed large randomized clinical trial and do you want to work in an inspiring environment at one of Europe’s largest institutions in epidemiology and biostatistics?

The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics conducts research in epidemiology and biostatistics in a wide range of areas within biomedical science. The department is among the largest in its field in Europe and has particularly strong research profiles in psychiatric, cancer, reproductive, pediatric, pharmacological, genetic and geriatric epidemiology, eating disorders, precision medicine, and biostatistics.

Part of the success of the department is due to our collaborative spirit, where a major contributing factor is that researchers at the department share and co-finance common resources (such as IT and an applied biostatistics group). The department is located on the Solna campus. More information is available at http://ki.se/meb .

Your role

We are looking for a driven and analytical person who wants to work with data management, programming and application of statistical analysis methods on data from the FIDURA and PRODICA intervention studies. In this role, you are responsible for contact and collaboration with laboratories for biochemical analyses. In your work, you will be responsible for writing scientific manuscripts and communicating the results in popular science. You will be a key person in an interdisciplinary research team with researchers from several universities.

About the studies

FIDURA: A placebo-controlled, randomized dietary intervention trial to investigate whether diet affects radiation-induced inflammation and long-term gut health. Patients with pelvic area tumors undergoing radiotherapy were enrolled and randomized to ingest fiber capsules or placebo during radiotherapy and 4 weeks afterwards. A large amount of data has been collected from baseline to one year after radiation via questionnaires, app, blood and feces. We have data on e.g. dietary intake, lifestyle, diseases, bowel symptoms (PROMs), Bristol scale and cytokines. Analyzes of e.g. metabolomics, proteomics, calprotectin, short chain fatty acids and microbiota will be performed. PRODICA: A randomized dietary intervention trial among men with prostate cancer scheduled to undergo radical prostatectomy. The aim was to investigate whether tumor growth is affected by a phytoestrogen-rich diet and whether the effect differs between men with different gene sets. Parts of this material have been published, but there is material left that has not been analyzed (e.g. dietary data, blood and tumor material).

Who are you?

We are looking for someone who is self-motivated and committed to improving the health and quality of life of cancer survivors. You are responsible, solution-oriented and work structured. Good at communicating, good collaboration skills and flexibility are important to handle challenges. We expect you to contribute scientifically and have your own ideas.

It is a requirement that you have:

  • experience in conducting research projects and analyzing epidemiological data
  • programming skills (SAS, R or Stata) for data management and analysis
  • good knowledge of Swedish and English

It is particularly advantageous if you have:

  • experience in conducting and analyzing clinical studies where different types of data are combined (patient-reported outcomes, biomarkers and other clinical data)
  • education in nutrition (e.g. nutritionist or dietitian) and/or in gastroenterology or radiation biology

It is advantageous if you have:

  • experience of using Swedish health care registers in research
  • clinical experience

To be employed as a postdoctoral fellow, a completed doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a Swedish doctoral degree is required. This eligibility requirement must be met at the latest at the time the employment decision is made. It is advantageous if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.

What do we offer?

Postdoctoral position for 2 years.

A creative, international inspiring environment filled with competence and curiosity. The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MEB) at Karolinska Institutet (KI) is one of Europe’s largest institutions in epidemiology and has a particular focus on deepening our knowledge of the causes of various diseases. Around 200 employees work with us in research, statistics and administration.

The FIDURA project is a collaboration between KI, Gothenburg University, Lund University and Chalmers University of Technology, which means that you will have a wide and unique network of contacts.

Karolinska Institutet is one of the world’s leading medical universities. Here we conduct successful medical research and have the largest range of medical education in Sweden. At KI, you get to meet researchers with different research specializations who work together. It is the cross-border collaboration that contributes to KI’s world-leading position in research. Several of the people you meet in healthcare are trained at KI. A close relationship with healthcare is important to create education and research of the highest quality. As a university, Karolinska Institutet is also a state authority. This means that you as an employee receive good benefits through our collective agreement.
