About the position

We have a vacancy as a postdoctoral fellow in sociology for a period of 3 years. The postdoctoral position is a qualification position where the main aim is to qualify for work in top scientific positions. The position is assigned 1 year with compulsory work in the form of teaching and guidance tasks in sociology.

As a postdoctoral fellow, you get to develop and carry out your own research project, and work with scientific publishing. In the position, you get to work independently on your own project, but with good opportunities for collaboration, follow-up and guidance through participation in the responsible group Migration and mobility  https://www.ntnu.no/iss/migrasjon-og-mobilitet  in which the position is anchored Here, experienced and younger researchers meet in a safe community that emphasizes supporting and developing the individual’s project. The research group organizes both internal and international seminars, and through the research group you get access to and the opportunity to make contacts that are important for your research project and further development. 

The research in the group is linked to various forms of mobility and migration at different levels of society, such as domestic and international migration, inequality and welfare, and change processes in local communities. The post doc position springs from this and will be a closer study of how local society and working life organization promote or discourage integration and inequality among migrant groups.

Your immediate supervisor is the head of department.

Qualification requirements

  • You must have completed a Norwegian doctorate in sociology or another relevant subject area (such as geography, social anthropology, political science), or an equivalent foreign doctorate which is considered equivalent to a Norwegian doctorate.

If you can document that the thesis has been submitted, your application can be considered even if you have not defended. Documentation of the obtained doctorate must be presented before you can take up the position. 

  • Applicants are assessed based on (1) the quality and potential of the project outline, including justification for the methodological approach, (2) the quality and relevance of the scientific production, (3) possible contributions to the research group and the institute.

We refer to  the Regulations on employment conditions for positions such as postdoctoral researcher, research fellow, scientific assistant and specialist candidate for general criteria for the position.

Salary and conditions 

In the position of postdoctoral fellow, code 1352, you will normally be paid NOK 594,500 gross per years depending on qualifications and seniority. A 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund is deducted from the salary.

The employment period is 3 years (incl. 1 year  of compulsory work ).

The appointment is carried out in accordance with the principles of  the State Employees Act , and legislation that regulates the export of knowledge, technology and services. 

After employment, you must expect that there may be changes in the work area.

It is a prerequisite that you can be present at and available to the institution on a daily basis.

About the application

The application and the description of the scientific works to be used as the basis for the assessment must be in Scandinavian or English. 

Publications and other scientific works that you wish to be taken into account during assessment must accompany the application. Please note that the application will only be assessed on the basis of the information you have given us by the application deadline. Therefore, make sure that your application clearly shows how your skills and experience meet the criteria described above. 

The application must contain:

  • Application letter in which you include your motivation for entering a postdoctoral position and motivation for working with teaching-related tasks. In addition, you must describe your methodological experience and, if applicable, other research-relevant information you think we should know. If you are in the final phase of your doctorate, we would like you to inform us of when it is estimated that you will have documentation of your completed degree.
  • CV and certificates
  • Transcripts and diplomas for obtained doctorates. If you have not completed your doctorate, you must submit a confirmation that the thesis has been submitted, or on the planned defense date.
  • A copy of the doctoral thesis. If you are close to submitting, or have recently submitted your thesis, you can attach a draft of the thesis. Documentation of a completed doctorate must be presented before taking up the position.
  • Research plan/project outline indicating how the applicant wishes to explore processes that challenge and affect migrants’ living conditions and ‘well-being’, outsiderness and connection to working life. Max. 4 pages, with progress plan.
  • Up to five publications or other relevant research work (in English or Scandinavian languages)
  • Names and contact details of three relevant references

If all or part of your education was taken abroad, we ask that you also attach documentation of the extent and quality of your entire educational course, both bachelor’s and master’s education, in addition to other higher education. A description of which documentation is required can be found here . If you already have a statement from the Directorate for Higher Education and Skills – HK-dir (formerly NOKUT), it is good if you attach this as well. 

We take joint work into account. If it is difficult to identify your efforts in the joint works, you must attach a brief explanation of your participation.

If you have had leave or another break in your career, it is important that this is stated in your application so that the selection committee can take this into account and that the amount of your research may be reduced as a result.
