Calico is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow who is excited to be part of a scientific team dedicated to unraveling the fundamentals of the aging process. We are looking for a scientist with a strong background in cellular and in vivo metabolism interested in applying this training to advance our understanding of the molecular mechanisms by which metabolic interventions affect aging, as well as the metabolic inputs and outputs to a variety of aging-related diseases and signaling pathways. The successful candidate will work independently within the Metabolomics group and use state of the art methods toward the goal of expanding our basic understanding of how metabolism changes with age.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform basic research to determine how altering metabolism through dietary intervention and/or genetic perturbations impacts the physiological effects of aging
  • Utilize in vivo stable isotope tracing and mass spectrometry to quantitatively measure age-related changes in metabolism
  • Publish papers and present findings both internally and at scientific conferences

Position Requirements:

  • Currently pursuing, or recently obtained a PhD in cell/molecular biology, biochemistry or a related field
  • Experience working with animal models to study human disease and/or aging
  • Deep knowledge of cellular and organismal metabolism
  • Detail-oriented and organized
  • A track record of strong research productivity
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills
  • Self-motivated with a “can-do” attitude
  • Flexible, able to respond quickly to shifting priorities and able to multitask
  • Must be willing to work onsite 5 days per week

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with liquid (LC-MS) or gas (GC-MS) chromatography mass spectrometry to measure metabolites and/or lipids
  • Experience using stable isotope labeling to understand metabolic fluxes
  • Competence with mammalian tissue culture, in vitro gene editing techniques (CRISPR/Cas9, viral transduction) and basic molecular biology methods
  • Familiarity with R or Python for data analysis and visualization

The estimated base salary for this role is $95,000.
